PvP and PvE within the same spec?

Hey everyone, I’m still not sure what class I’ll be maining in Classic, and I was wondering if there were any classes that could PvP optimally (mainly in terms of premades- AB and WSG) while still being useful in raids without changing specs.

Originally I wanted to roll with a warrior, but I was told that arms is trash for raiding, so I’d have to switch to fury. The closest thing I can think of would be a 0/30/21 druid, which would have most of the talents needed for flag carrying and healing (could also probably get away with tanking 5 mans?), but I’m not sure how viable even that is.

Could someone with more vanilla knowledge help me out?

I never changed specs between raiding and pvp as a hunter.

Is that because hunters are viable without changing spec? or because hunters are bad either way? :stuck_out_tongue:

Hunters are actually really good in PVP.

Shhhh, its a meme!

100% warlock

There are some specs that are decent too like frost mage but those have some talents switched around for PVE and PvP specifically that could hinder you a bit either way.

But sm/ruin for pvp and pve are almost the exact same spec and the spec EXCELS in both areas

It’s because a MM hunter is dangerous in pvp and the best pve raid spec for hunters.

It’s a bad meme.

Isn’t that kinda the definition?

Your PvP spec would be fine for 5 man tanking and viable for 5 man healing (subject to skill and gear). Raids you may get a spot in a casual guild but a serious progression guild is unlikely to take you.

This. Warlock can run SM/Ruin in both aspects perfectly fine… It’s not THE VERY TOP SPEC in either venue, but it’s a very close #2 for PvE, and more than viable for PvP.

Also fwiw, PvE and PvP Enhancement are basically one of the same two specs (and it really doesn’t matter which you bring because both are terrible)

Rogue can run a Seal Fate build that is decent in both, particularly with a 120 energy setup and copious amounts of Thistle Tea/Rentakis usage… but there are talent variations between a pvp and pve setup for it.

Well any healing spec should be fine and most pure dps have a pvp spec that will be adequate in raids.

It is true that it’s not the best of the best for either venue but honestly, the difference really isn’t that drastic like you said here, and on top of that the best pve spec cripples you in pvp and the best pvp spec (well for solo play) cripples you in pve.

If I were to play a lock I would run sm/ruin 24/7 and never respec again.

There will always be a need for a friendly healer in both pvp and pve

You’re missing out, particularly from a pvp perspective =D

Half the fun of the class is that it has so very many viable pvp builds. I personally recommend a Nightfall/Conflag setup as being a bit better than SM/Ruin.

but SM/DS, Soulink-Shadowburn, Soulink/NF, and deep destro all genuinely awesome as well…

Vanilla lock class design in general for vanilla was just great, imo… but yeah, if you really want to avoid ever respeccing, something like

Is fairly perfect.

In vanilla I regularly switched specs going from PVE to PVP (battlegrounds). Generally speaking, being a demo-lock, for PVP I often went with MD/Ruin builds for the Fel Hunter’s resists and the VWs damage reduction. That build doesn’t have much use for RAIDing. I usually wound up switching twice a day or so.

The other thing I did, being a PVE Raider at the time (hate me all you want for this)… since I PVP’d a lot as well, I had access to numerous high-level PVP gear pieces as well as high-level PVE gear pieces and I would mix-and-match them in PVP to get the best of both worlds.

Idk I really loved that spec when I played it. It just felt less safe and more skill based imo. I loved the skill ceiling of the spec with mass doting for instant 3k hitting bolts with the burn to finish people off.

I’m playing a mage priest or hunter anyway as I’ve played enough of warlock in my day.

Eh I mean… I can’t imagine fighting warriors without exhaust. Yeah the instant cast with conflag is nice burst but I feel like it gets shut down a lot more than sm/ruin. Like if they are getting cleansed like crazy it can be super annoying plus your damage while you’re being a turret in big fights is subpar imo. I just love smruin when you finally hve a second to cast and you get that nightfall proc mid cast and just 123 a MFer

Thanks for all the replies guys, these warlock specs look sick. I didnt realize that all 3 of their trees were actually pretty good

You just reminded me of something else for Vanilla lock, the playstyle differences of people in general… An old rank 14 combo spriest/lock husband/wife team on my server did a pretty inordinate amount of account sharing to get the warlock her title, and I could immediately tell which one of the was playing on their playstyle alone…

I bring that up, because I rarely if ever used CoEx for anything but chasing runners, greatly preferring agony or Shadows in most situations. So it was never a big loss to me, playing as NF/Conflag save for dealing with a few hunters who where constantly kiting backwards every time you touched them once. Overall the playstyle of NF/Conflag is nearly identical to SM/Ruin if you make liberal usage of the succubus, and if anything it’s actually substantially harder to shut down since you get significantly more mobility adding a secondary instant cast to your rotation, as well as being substantially less single spell school dependent than SM/Ruin. Even the burst is fairly close… You lose a bit of bite on Sbolt and Sburn, but you can make up for it with Immo/Conflag between CC combos. Easily two of my favorite builds during the vanilla era =)
