[PvE - Ret ] Is there a haste "cap"?

Without any buffs, I’m currently sitting at 37% haste. I know that’s high, but I didn’t think it was THAT high.

Hitting the vault today, raidbots is showing that my biggest DPS increase is to replace a 483 ring with another 483 ring (swapping out my Seal of the Regal Loa for this):

Going from a 483 ring to another 483 ring is a bigger upgrade than getting this and maxing it out:

Augury is listed as one of our better single-target trinkets, but even though I’m using a B-tier 476 trinket (Ember of Nullification), my haste is so high that it’s become a detriment to my performance?

I was super high on Haste at first and quickly realized that Vers is a Very important stat. I’d go ring over the trinket, unless you just want iLVL. The trinket has been buffed, and while inconsistent…. Can be very good. I’m running the smolderon trinket and the augery at 487.

You want that ring and the rare volocross neck while focusing gems in versa/ crit.

Go to raider.io and check out some of the top paladins, and that should give you an idea.

From what I’ve gathered, Haste should be in around the 30-35%-ish area. Afterward you’re hitting diminishing returns.

Thank you for the replies, I went with the ring since I’m not too concerned about the ilvl boost.

As a general rule I follow myself, the sweet spot is ~5100 haste rating.

Respect for specifying PvE in title.

To answer your question. Yes there’s a haste cap. You can’t get more than 126% from gear rating.

Penalties are as follows:

  • From 0 to 30%, there’s no penalty.
  • From 30% to 39%, there’s a 10% penalty.
  • From 39% to 47%, there’s a 20% penalty.
  • From 47% to 54%, there’s a 30% penalty.
  • From 54% to 66%, there’s a 40% penalty.
  • From 66% to 126%, there’s a 50% penalty.

So how does this work? Your haste doesn’t drop by a flat% amount just because you reached a breakpoint. What happens is that you receive less value for each point of haste as you go up. This in turn makes it to where you need MORE haste to get to a higher haste rating.

Pretend you have 300 haste and that gives you 30% haste. Because of the 10% penalty, to reach 39% haste, you now need 400 haste instead of 390 like you would expect.

So you don’t need to stress about haste cap unless you are in the 20%+ penalty range. For any given class there’s a optimal stat priority so just follow your sim. Simulations are a good way to tell when you are losing value from a stat because your stat priority will simply change.

Should have taken Augury, you can craft a ring and the ring is also easier to get than Augury.

To me it’s insane that you didn’t take augury. I’ve been trying to get that trinket since the start of the patch with no luck.

I’m never going to see it in the vault again, am I?

Yeaahhhh…

Look, don’t beat yourself up about it.

Maybe the trinkets from TotT and/or AD will finally drop…

:dracthyr_cry_animated:

Keep in mind that haste rating from buffs doesn’t affect DR, so the optimal amount of haste is 5100 rating just from gear.

you sim and do what the robot says.

I hope it drops for you, too! Thank you for asking the question, too. I’m slowly getting into ret this expansion and I’ve a bunch to learn.

Sims will tell you the most accurate picture for you but I started swapping out haste at 5100.

Vers > Haste (~5100) > Crit > Mastery

Once you hit a certain Crit becomes really important. Versatility is always important. Mastery is a good stat in M+, but I don’t go searching for it on gear - I’d rather have Vers/Crit

Also, damn man, you should have taken Augury! That trinket is amazing and you can always swap out easier to replace slots to rebalance your haste.

Don’t forget, it’s not just 5100 haste vs 5100 mastery vs 5100 crit.

For every 1% of vers, you need 205pts. If you wanted 1% additional of mastery, you’d spend about 85 pts. If you want blah-blah pts of crit or haste, you need so many points of enchants or gear.

So that 165 pts from ring enchants won’t give you 1% of vers, but it will give you 2% of mastery.

I think you picked the wrong numbers here to calculate. For 1% of each stat, these are the stat weights I’m seeing:
Haste - 170
Crit - 180
Mast - 180
Vers - 205

To find out, hover over the stat in your character window and you’ll see, for example, “Mastery: 1798 [+9.99%]”. Do 1798/9.99 = 179.98 ~= 180 stat value for 1% of mastery.
The actual Mastery % will be different because you are getting 4% from Seal Of Might Talent and 8% by default as base (take off all gear and you’ll have 12% with talent).

Having said that, dang, I wish I had augury show up in vault. I feel like stats are usually flexible with enchants and gems and just alternative gear like the ring example in OP, but things like trinkets are just way more impactful and less flexible. Good luck in next vault.

No and its still arguably better
