Putting WoW folder in a solid state drive? Faster?

WoW loading takes too long. If I get a solid state drive and put my WoW folder in there and leave my windows and everything on my current drive now, would WoW load up faster?

I put all my MMOs, or just big games with lots of stuff to load, on an SSD. It’s a considerable difference, and you go from waiting for load-times, to them being almost insignificant.

I absolutely recommend it. In fact, maybe even buy another SSD - they’re very cheap at the moment, and buying one just to shove games on honestly isn’t an awful idea right now.

Put your OS and your Games on the SSD. Leave your documents, videos, etc., on a HDD. You can defrag your HDD to makes things a bit faster, but don’t do it for the SDD.

Ideally, get an NMVe SDD if your motherboard supports it. Easy AF to install and load times that make quick trips for snacks impossible.

Personally I have it on a HDD and my load times are still extremely quick…

I have my OS on my SSD and 2x 4TB HDDs.

My fiance noticed a huge difference after switching from and HDD to and SSD. I recommend putting your OS and games on an SSD, you are worth it.

Plus SSD prices aren’t what they used to be, so you could easily pick up a 500Gb / 1Tb without having to sell a kidney.*

*If you still want to unload a kidney, call me; I know a guy.

I have all of my Blizzard games on my SSD. Legion Dalaran simply takes too long to load without an SSD.

Having WoW on a SSD will definitely help, but loading times like Legion Dalaran might be somewhat long still.

Do I just drag and drop the WoW folder into the SSD after I install it?

Pretty much. However, I recommend making a copy of your Addon folder and your WTF folder. Uninstall WoW and reinstall on the SSD. (This helps for things with regards to your OS). You can copy over your Addons and WTF folder after the install.

I ordered a ADATA SU635 480GB 3D-NAND QLC SATA 2.5 inch Internal SSD (ASU635SS-480GQ-R) from Amazon

It arrives tomorrow, hopefully it’ll work

Sorry for slow response-- work :frowning:

[Asus Prime Z270M-Plus] will support M.2 NVMe drives. (They look like a stick on RAM, somewhat, it seems this board will have 2 slots for it.)

You ordered a SATA SSD. You will need to run a cable from your PSU to your new SSD for powering it up, and also run a SATA cable from your motherboard to your SSD as well. NVMe is still much faster than SATA, and you won’t need the extra cables; but you’ll still see significant improvements, especially to your OS loading.

running the game from an ssd is definitely quicker, but if you use as many addons as i do, it is still about 4 seconds after the loading screen before i can move my character around

edit: and definitely back up your WTF folder regularly – should the client crash, often the first things to reset to default are all your addon settings

It will make loading much, much faster, but don’t expect it to make much of a difference once the game is loaded because unless the HDD is busy with other jobs, the game can usually fetch additional assets fast enough from an HDD.

Personally I keep WoW on my HDD because I don’t wait long enough after loading screens for it to annoy me and my SSD is small, but I also only play classic so it has less to load.

My previous rig was mechanical, aside from the boot drive, and the current one is pure SSD. I can tell you that yes everything loads much faster on an SSD.

Ssd drive makes a world of difference op. I upgraded from sata 1tb Seagate hard drive to a Crucial 1 tb 2.5 ssd a few months ago, and the load times for wow are a whole lot faster. Just glad the pci ssd drives are finally starting to drop in prices, because that will be what I go with next, if the ssd I have now ever kicks the bucket.

My computer is 5 years old But with a SSD. Dalaran during legion would only take a few seconds at the most. Out beats 2 minuites that it would take my brothers computer to load

Just reinstall Win10 and WoW onto your SSD.

I have an i5 with SSD and smaller graphics card and it’s much faster than my i7 with better graphics card and HDD.

The real question is why do you want to keep your OS on a HDD? There is really no reason to even have a HDD at all anymore. I used to keep one for my movie collection, but now everything is streaming anyway.

All I have is 1 M.2 drive for EVERYTHING.

Damn fast.
