Putting together a capture team?

I haven’t captured a pet in the wild in three or four years. I know that using the Terrible Turnip helps since Weakening Blow can’t kill the pet you’re trying to capture. Any other guidelines or tips?

Be wary of wild pets that can kill themselves before you have the chance to capture it. Always check what abilities your desired wild pet is using, and if they have one that will make it potentially impossible for capture (e.g. Explode, Unholy Ascension, etc.) just forfeit and restart the battle until that ability has changed. A number of upcoming wild pets in Patch 9.1 will have abilities that can make for a very frustrating experience if you’re not paying attention.

Terrible Turnip is the OG, but try out other pets with Weakening Blow and Superbark. Different pet families might be better than others in certain situations.

For capturing wild pets I prefer pets with some sustainability. Feline Familiar is one of my go-to pets, since it has a self-heal, and is strong against both Critter and Flying (pet families that you’ll encounter quite often).

My capture team is the Terrible Turnip, Brutus (for superbark, which is also a “no kill” ability), and an Emerald Proto Whelp to handle chewing through the other two battlers.

The best Capture pet is Lord Wolfington (P/P) so max damage, a friend suggested the combo Howl then Superbark. Another note on pets that self destruct, either cast a stun or swap out to do backline damage then try a capture. Grumpy (H/P) also has the Howl / Superbark combo attack.
My Capture team:
Anubisath Idol x2 (the two pets you want to kill)
Sandstorm - Big damage and limits incoming damage 5 rounds
Crush - Damage to kill the pet you don’t want captured

Lord Wolfington - for the pet you wish to capture
Howl -
Superbark - Max damage and won’t reduce a pets health below 1
Toss capture crate until wild pet is caught

I don’t think it’s that strategic anymore, I usually use a random team of 25’s, make sure I don’t use a strong attack against the pet that I want to catch and just use regular attacks to bring it down to the point where it can be caught, worked for years now. Turnip/Corgi may be on the safe side but really doesn’t seem necessary to me anymore.

Totally unnecessary till you get a surprise proc and kill a pet, rarity, or breed you’ve been trying to find for hours.

If I’m battling a pet that I want to catch with a generic team I just make sure to use a pet with one with a simple attack ability that’s either normal or weak, even procs aren’t strong enough to take away the health further than it’s necessary to make the pet catchable.

I made this post a year ago! I actually settled on five capture teams but I could probably streamline it down to two. Capture Flying would have the Terrible Turnip as Weakening Blow isn’t weak against Flying pets. Capture Everything Else would have Corgnelius, Grumpy or other beast with Superbark which is weak against flying.

There are now three pets with Weakening Blow, and I prefer that ability to Superbark because there is no cooldown. I can spam Weakening Blow, but Superbark has a 4-round cooldown, so I can still end up losing pets or having to wait out a 4-round cooldown to use Superbark a 2nd time. Any pet with self-heal makes the Superbark method really iffy…and I don’t like iffy, especially if I’ve found a blue/rare in the wild.

For that reason, I assemble all of my Trap n’ Tame teams with a Weakening Blow pet, and I almost never use one of the Superbark dogs.

a. Terrible Turnip
b. Snobold Runt (my preferred Weakening Blow pet)
c. Stemmins

I prefer the Snobold to the Turnip or Stemmins because he has Snowball, which is an elemental attack that does moderate damage and is spammable. I find it convenient to just pull Paraffin (my snobold) forward for the entire fight against the pet I want to trap.

My favorite Trap Team is:

1.) Level 23 Pet to Level: All level 25 captured pets are 23, so I have tons of these. I just toss one in the first slot and Bob’s yer uncle. The level pet opens the fight with something simple and then I move it to the backline and pull out my Snobold.

2.) Snobold Runt: I use his Snowball until the trap pet is around 50% and then swap to Weakening Blow spam until trappable.

3.) Void-Scarred Anubisath: I prefer this guy to wipe up over the OG Anubisath because Spiritfire Bolt is better damage against more classes of pet. He is an excellent cleaner.

I have other Trap n’ Tame teams, but I haven’t used any of them in a long time. This is my go-to. When I’m out to catch pets, I apply Safari Hat and cycle through level 23’s, sometimes putting in the one I just caught and going in turns. It takes 3 battles with no other buffs to get a fresh-caught 23 to 25 this way. Very efficient.
