So I just came back from a hiatus where I wasnt able to play. I want to get back to trying and push some mythic + content as disc.
Everything I have read and seen shows Purge the Wicked as a bad talent choice, but on Raiderio it shows basically every high level priest running it.
Am i missing something?
Thanks

Where did you read that Purge is always bad? IcyVeins says “Purge the Wicked does 10% more damage than Shadow Word: Pain, but has the ability to cleave the DoT to nearby targets, making this a viable option in raids or dungeons when you can get sufficient uptime on the DoT’s as well as have additional targets available to cleave it to.”
In low level keys, adds usually don’t live long enough, but in higher keys they definitely do, and Purge becomes better. Most talents have situational uses; any good guide will extrapolate on those uses.

Your missing the fact that top key teams are different than most keys under 15. High lvl teams are mechanically close to perfect so the healing req is lower. Focus is about timing and disc talents that push damage out are more common. For the rest of us it is about dealing some damage but mainly keeping the group up is first priority and talents will more reflect that, or should.

I like it a lot in mythic+. It saves a lot of GCDs on trash packs. It also allows you to get up purge on all your targets AND sustain it very easily without having to reapply. It is a decent amount of free HPS.
Halo runs the risk of pulling more things which can be accounted for with position, but is a burst CD. It doesnt heal that much on a 5 man. Divine Star is decent but again is a mini burst.
I would still rather have Purge since it is a fire and forget it spell on trash. You can keep it spread with penance. It procs penance damage without having to spend the GCD to renew it. I’d argue it can free up an average of 4-5 GCDs a trash pull.
I take all 3 talents on the row depending on the dungeon/affixes, I’ve been leaning more and more towards divine star because it’s pretty good for hitting spawn of ghunn adds.
Serenity - that was my thinking too, the freed up globals. Im still getting used to playing disc again (played it a lot towards the end of legion but i really havent played BFA at all).
Right now im struggling with healing because I dont heal for anything, i had a debuff that I needed to get above 90% in waycrest and i literally couldnt do it spamming mend. Im sure once im better than 316 ilvl it will get easier
I use Purge too because of the reasons Serenity mentioned. I tried the other two but they the require too much micro management to use effectively.
To be fair, Purge is better suited for Fortified than Tyrannical weeks.
I only use Purge because Holy Fire is my favorite ability in WoW, and Purge is basically just a spamable version if it
is that a dumb reason to pick a talent? Maybe…
But hey, I find it more fun so whatever.

purge the wicked is great if you feel lazy and want to mindlessly press tab and spam it to take things out of your rotation
I just started bfa dungeons. I am just now running with purge for the first time. I used to run with halo. Every group im in has not wiped a single time. It honestly has made a noticeable difference for me. This is all just my opinion though. Im by no means an expect either. Just giving my own experience. Pop a radiance and a few of these and then drop schism with a penence and then throw solace and youre good.
There’s only minor differences between doing that and doing the exact same thing with Shadow Word: Pain. Not enough to make it noticeably easier at that level. And honestly, Divine Star is so much better than Halo in a dungeon unless you have very good awareness of pull distance.
I’ve found that In very difficult dungeons (higher M+ on fortified), that purge the wicked makes a huge difference.
Not because it heals for more, but because of the globals it frees up later in the pulls. This is especially true in pugs, where people take more damage and you more likely need to spam heal and won’t have the time to reapply shadow word pain. That passive healing really makes a big difference. The mana savings is nothing to scoff at either.
For non fortified weeks I’d probably run divine Star for more burst Damage, but I have personally never really found the healing from Divine Star to be impactful.
I should have been more clear - I was speaking to someone at level 110, which is a very far cry from high mythic+ fortified, which is exactly the type of situation purge excels at. I seriously doubt at 110 purge over pain is making a serious impact; certainly not enough to prevent wipes.
