Pumpers or pumping

I’m just trying to figure out how people can unironically use the term without dying of self-inflicted embarrassment.

I have no idea what exactly it means and at this point, I’m too afraid to ask

LF big pumper for H SP; must be 6.3" and can bench 280lbs. no simps

Pretty much what other people have said. It cropped up in WoW from the sizable portion of the playerbase whose main motivation for playing the game is comparing & validating the size of their E-peen. Regardless of individual skill level. Spread from there.

Pretty much everyone craves that satisfaction that comes from being better than others, to one degree or another. Just a human nature thing. Social dominance/hierarchy lizard brain. Some players just have it worse, to the point of being mildly annoying.

You’d see it in OW, too. No matter the skill rating you look at, some people take their SR insanely seriously and would do anything they could to maintain/improve it, with the fun from the game itself being secondary.

Most people are a fairly healthy blend where they strive to play as well as they can, but mostly play for fun or to play with friends. Just roll your eyes when people geek out too much about it. Unless they’re dicks about it. But that’s less a “pumper” issue and more a “some people are dicks” thing.

I consider certain slang terms (such a pumper) in LFG channel as simply a warning flag to avoid certain player/personality types.

Heh. Yeah. Same here. It’s not proof that I should avoid them, as some people are just excitable about numbers. But it’s a red flag that makes me cautious. Same with groups advertising for spellcleave and boasting it’ll be an easy run.

My experience is that the more someone boasts in LFG, the more likely the run will be a cluster.

If I was playing any MMORPG I would skip the players using that terminology.

It’s a pretty big spotlight that says “I lack original thought and I’m trying really hard to fit in”. These guys are meta slaves.
