Because you can’t feel good sometimes if you can’t feel bad at other times. Its basic human nature at this point.
And we’re greatly over-extrapolating the emotional response most people will will get from running a suboptimal talent on some fights. I understand OCD is a thing but like, can’t design a game for millions and spare the feefees of everyone.
I get that, but it seems like locking covenants is going to negatively affect the gameplay of a good portion of people.
I’d say the worst that will happen will be people brute-forcing it through alts. But once again, to what extent can Blizzard add any choice to the game if all they can worry about is protecting a minority of people from themselves?

Not once have i looked at my talents and thought: “Man, i wish i could only swap them once a month. It would make me much more happy…”

On the other hand anytime i pull open my own tab i’m like “why can’t i use anything else on half of these rows?”
Like the current state of the talent tree is hardly even a choice.
Name me one situation where i shouldn’t spec into Mongoose bite.
‘My essences dont feel meaningless at all.‘
This. New abilities should not be locked to covenants. They should work like essences.
Soulbind and conduits are fine the way they look.

My BIS essence is Visions of Perfection on BM lol, i don’t even notice it.
If talents are that imbalanced, why do we suppose their covenant abilities are going to be any better?

There’s no guarantee there and i promise if they really screw it up that badly, i’ll be right with you guys on the ripcord train.
But i’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt just to shake things up a bit. Game is stale and remove covenants and literally all you got is Legion 2.0
That is a good question and should be considered in the next balance update. Not by impeding players ability to do multiple parts of the game. You dont jump from “This isnt balanced” to “Lets just force people to use it instead of balance it”.
Having 2 suboptimal abilities situationally won’t impede you to do anything.
Is this the 1%-argument again? Arent we through with this? The way the covenant and class abilities are designed there is no way this isnt a huge detriment to any content youre doing if you got the wrong one for the content. It also isnt JUST a problem about xx% DPS, but also about utility, which is close to invaluable in the harder content.
They WILL impede your ability to do content.

That’s largely because the BM essences are trash in raid in M+ it’s bote which causes significant burst windows.

There certainly seems to be a mindset that if something is slightly broken then the way you fix it is to completely and utterly destroy it.
As a healer I can’t test what the “optimal covenant” is going to be until after I’ve locked in my choice, because I have to wait for raids and the mythic+ season to start. That kind of system just…feels terrible.
Not that it matters when the only okay looking covenant ability for MW received a 96% nerf…
Also, I do mythic+ as my main content and raid on the side. You can argue all you want about there being an optimal covenant for raiding versus an optimal covenant for mythic+. But here’s the thing. I swap my essences on a week to week basis depending on the affixes. Sometimes I want more damage. It’s a bursting week? Better bring the strongest aoe heals I can.
And yes, this is optimizing my character. On my monk. Why can’t class be enough of a “meaningful choice?”

Sometimes with certain gear. And if you want to switch VoP for Botm because it is vastly superior in mythic plus, you can from any rest area. And this is how new abilities should work.
I don’t like the idea of flip flopping covenants. And the issue would go away if they took abilities out of covenants.
Only difference is, you cannot and shouldn’t be able to change your class. Covenants have an issue that is entirely preventable.
What’s the logic for Classes to be a sacred concept as something that’s static but anything else shouldn’t be though?
At this point let me reroll what i want. I really want to be a Fire Mage for M Nzoth, i should be allowed to be one in order to be fully optimal at all times.
The issue stems from the fact that if they needed to be nerfed by a margin of up to 97% in some cases there’s no way they’ll be within a margin of 5% at launch.
You don’t make 97% nerfs to stuff no matter what state the game is in.

Because the amount of logistical issues from changing a class are insane. Are you gonna be a Mage wearing cloth and using Fire magic suddenly wanting to put on some Plate armor and summon the undead and stuff as a Death Knight?
Classes are the one thing that absolutely doesn’t make sense as a flexible concept.
