So in a game where a war started between humans and these orcs that came through a portal connected to another planet, that evolved into an insanely political war involving bipedal cows, zombies, and elves, who all use magic and occasionally change into other animals… There’s limits to what kind of names you can give yourself and create a backstory to?

Nope. It’s a fine name, but people like Wrenias would report your name and it’d get forcibly changed.
Funny story, I was actually reported for this name once. When the GM contacted me. I owned him with a backstory I made on the fly about My druids ancestors ties to nature and my affinity for being in the bear form and how my NE brothers new me by my growl and was given the name Growlingbear as an honor. The GM was impressed and told me to have a nice day.
I’ve never had the good fortune to be messaged by a GM before my name is changed; always just logged in to see my name gone.
Imagine having such a low IQ that you report people who dont RP the same way as you

I figured it was because my name wasn’t offensive in the least. I also name droped stormrage and wisperwind so the GM was reminded that other NE have names like that. He seemed happy with my BS story and let me go. Never got bothered again. I’m sure it was someone I killed horde side that was mad a druid killed them. This was in early BC.
I gotta say people take a simple rule and blow it way out of context. This is me and my group of friends personally but we don’t sideline or report players with names that could quite possibly be RP. FYI “Greycastle” is badass and could be a last name so no I wouldn’t touch that.
It’s names like “Imnotagrape” “Iluvpoptarts” this morning I saw “Smallballs” as a guild name. Other names like “Abiggreenorc” “Milkycow” “Dlkwad” I saw a guy with “Fuk” in his name. Now all you asking questions answer honestly that you don’t believe these are people trolling and I’ll stop wasting time on you.
I’ve said before no RP server I’ve been on wasn’t welcoming to players who don’t RP. That’s expected but respect a simple rule or gtfo. No ones forcing you to roll here but there is 1 to 2 small a** rules to follow if you do, your name and don’t grief RP events. Why is this still an issue?

Because some people are unreasonable, and names like “Greycastle” will get reported and forcibly changed.
Add to that most people aren’t so fragile they can’t handle someone having a name they don’t like walking nearby.
Plenty of people love RPing, but they don’t necessarily love the gatekeeping from the RP realm community. People who wouldn’t mind getting into RP every now and then are run out of the realm by people who care more about policing RP than actually RPing.

That sounds like an issue totally unrelated to my post. If you feel people are being treated this way, then you should go out of your way to make people feel welcome.
And don’t encourage them to make a silly name and expect people on an RP server to be happy with it.

Oh, if I wanted to encourage people to RP, I’d tell them to avoid RP servers, because the RP realm community has all the wrong priorities when it comes to RP, in my opinion.
If you’re more interested in enforcing the naming rules than actually RPing, and that seems to be a very common sentiment in RP realms, then it’s going to be difficult to attract new RPers. It’s very off-putting.

Nowhere did I ever state I was more concerned with the naming rules over actually RPing. That’s on you. Ever since we started talking, all you’ve done is assume things about me that are not true. And it’s making you look bad, not me.
So as I said, please continue to assume things about me, or the RP community in general and make generalizations based on your own personal bad experiences. It’s only causing you to look like the villain here. Not me or anyone else.

You don’t have to. The fact the names are your concern and not actual roleplaying says it for you.
Names, mind you, that I’ve shown to be technically against the rules but totally appropriate for RP in WoW.

I’m not sure who are the bigger jerks: The folks who roll characters on RP servers with questionable names, of the folks that report every name that doesn’t conform to ‘their’ guidelines for what is appropriate.
It’s a close contest, but I’m going with the jerks who report every name they don’t like.
