PSA Discord being used to distribute malware

Just ran across this news story. I have no idea if this means you’re at risk if you use Discord, hopefully someone else can answer that.

Yes I know the off topic section exists, but nobody reads that section, so here it is in GD.

Basically

Don’t download random stuff off discord or join random servers you don’t know

Seems like basic concepts to me

Yeah but what always seems like common sense is never there for others. It amazes the lack of sense most people have, but then again I work IT so kinda have to know my stuff.

You mean you shouldn’t randomly download everything you see?

Yea people with at least some IT experience probably would never have any issues with this

But to be fair, the article does have quite the click bait title and makes it sound like just having discord will get you hacked or something

Always download extra ram

Don’t click random links from random people. Remember the Cata/MOP rated battleground fiasco?

As a technical note though, this isn’t really news. Discord has exceptional admin tools for servers and has been used in automated ways to distribute malware forever.

Here’s whats happening here -

Hackers on discord are tricking people into downloading malware by renaming malware installers with Common names. They’re hosting these installers on the Discord CDN.

The lesson here ? Don’t be a dumbass and download some program because some random person on Discord sends you a link to it. Do some research into finding the official website where the software is available and download from there. Always have a decent virus checking and active malware checking software installed doing both regular scans and on demand scans.

Also this reminds me of a story a fellow classmate of mine once shared -

He was having an argument on with some guy on a Bulletin Board System
The other guy decided he would send him a virus.

He was connected via an terminal and the file downloaded via Zmodem.
So he saw this in the terminal

NeckBeard wants to send you a file “Virusinstall.exe”
Download ? [Y/N]

Common sense has never been very common - especially when dealing with things on the interwebs.

So to recap:

Click-baity not-really news.

No, I’m not really at risk, unless I’m a dumbass.

Use commonly uncommon sense and don’t click on things.

Don’t download anything from discord. Find the actual official website for what you want to download.

Carry on.

“What could possibly go wrong with downloading and opening linkinpark_in_the_end.mp3.exe?"
