Fun, enough to turn it off immediately on log in.
I just canât stand the sound of people chewing, burping, or sneezing in my ear. And it has happened too many times. Push to Talk should be the legal requirement for any voice interaction. Chewing on an active mic should get you banned.
By fun you mean annoying, I agree.
ESO had it. I turned it off in a flash.
FWIW, Chewing is basically not a thing with the filtering something like Discord uses these days. Cuts out a TON of background noises like PC fans, actual fans, chewing, typing, etc.
Isnât gonna stop a burp/sneeze/whatever, but it cuts out a lot of the passive stuff.
ALL games using voice chat need to include some level of noise suppression like that. The amount of indie games that just take the raw mic audio, especially in horror or horror adjacent games, is unacceptable. Especially with mechanical keyboards being so popular among gamers now.
With the assumption of noise suppression, PTT is just the worse option IMO. It stifles organic reactions and such. Though of course it needs to be available for people who know theyâre going to have too much noise around them or will be talking to people in their area or something.
I have no faith in Blizzard doing a proper implementation so I will stay away from their voice chat.
The current voice chat is similar to Discord in voice quality, though obviously with very few options. Totally serviceable for pugs, but people were already used to Discord so it doesnât get touched.
I have zero problems talking to strangers but proximity voice chat is absolutely a miserable experience.
FWIW I do think having it an MMO could be iffy just due to density.
But itâs really nice at a smaller scale.
I played ESO for a few months and had to turn off their proximity chat because it was basically an incomprehensible wall of noise.
Like a Krusty Burger drive-thru speaker box
Might be interesting on an NPC channel, where you can hear the quest giver when you get in range, or have magic mirrors that spam little Stormwind Advertisements, but I would not have it for players.
The propensity for spam would be overwhelming.
