I like tanking stuff now and then, but when I realize I’m playing a warrior and my option is to play prot warrior, I get super demotivated. What are you guys take on this? I have played every tank spec so far and prot is by far the least engaging and most boring one. Not only some spells have very bad class fantasy, but the rotation and our tools to deal with damage, aside from physical attacks, are terrible.
I’m torn on this because on one hand I totally get where you’re coming from but on the other I really love playing Fury and have no desire to switch do a different class altogether to Tank. Also, while its really simple, it’s also very effective and it makes it easier to pay attention to dungeon/ raid mechanics. I wouldn’t mind a bit of pizzaz but at the same time I’m fine with it as is.
Really? I’d say warrior is probably the most fun tank imo, lots of fast gameplay and quick thinking.
Agree with zebuum here. I really enjoy prot warrior tanking, what with slamming my shield into peoples faces, slamming the ground in fury to get aggro, and screaming to inspire teammates. Idk, I think it’s pretty cool!
I feel like its all due to poor rage generation, so it feels kinda weird to play. You are constantly spamming shield slam and thunder clap and there isn’t much flavor to your other spells. I’d say if we had like a new single target skill to add to your rotation (Shield Bash comes to mind) so that we would not be spamming thunder clap in single target and if Ignore Pain was stronger and it had a relation to shields, it would be golden.
I really liked my Prot war back in Wrath. There was a big gap in my play time of Warrior between then and now. I still kind of like it, I just feel I have to spam buttons and I don’t really like spamming buttons.
By far though I don’t think Prot War is boring. Guardian is far more boring than Prot War.
Not much flavor? Warrior has so many tools in its kit, I’m not sure what you mean.
But yes, the gameplay is pretty repetitive. Avatar and Last stand, spam thunderclap and ignore pain, maybe demo shout if its a bigger than average pack. Spam shield block when last stand wears off.
Id say visually. And adding to what I said, and you agreed with me, the rotation isnt interactive. Take brewmaster for example, stagger management makes for a cool interaction while playing the spec. Prot warrior has none of that. It also bothers me that every other tank spec has a higher HP pool and much better self sustain.
Well that’s just how it’s designed to be played. As a warrior you have to think before the damage hits and be proactive, whereas something like death knight just lets it happen then heals it back up. I think that aspect makes it a lot more fun than other specs, it’s very easy to tell a really good prot warrior from an average one.
As for HP pools, Paladin and Monk have the smallest HP pools of the tank specs I believe.
Warrior has more uptime management than brewmaster, maybe you’re just playing it wrong? Not sure
Its also kind of a gear thing. With bad gear prot warriors dont feel fun to play and are clunky. With a good amount of haste/vers Prot war feels amazing and does tuns of damage with a lot of fluid button pushing.
I didn’t complain about the spec being bad, I have no problem tanking as prot, I just said its BORING. CD management isn’t = FUN and interactive.
Then go look at other tank specs, because warrior is easily the most engaging one to play right now.
Druid? Thrash/Mangle spam until you get ironfur, repeat. Situational utility.
DK? Your mitigation is built into your rotation. Press Death Strike after taking heavy damage. Some cooldown management with AMS and Vampiric Blood.
DH? Press Fracture. Press soul cleave. Press Demon Spikes when big damage incoming. Go gluttony and vision of perfection major and have >1mil HP for half the dungeon.
Monk? Press Ironskin brew every 8 seconds while doing a dps rotation, press purifying when bar goes red.
Paladin? Press SotR when big damage incoming, press whatever the self heal is after taking heavy damage, rotate cooldowns properly.
None of the tank specs are particularly difficult but Warrior is definitely the most engaging of them all.
Edit: I’m not here to say you’re wrong, warrior is still flawed, it feels at times there’s no way to generate rage and you just sit there being spanked sometimes, and it could be more fun in some ways, but right now it’s still very engaging to play imo.
Basically there isn’t much you can do with your prot warrior in the sense of customization, where as other tanks you have plenty of options. I’d say Guardian druid suffers too, you have a point there.
I think I have a fix for you, you might have heard of classic wow, you get to choose your talents a lot better there, added benefit of classic wow is that the skill level is a lot better suited for a person of your caliber.
I think you will find the choices available for warriors to be in your taste, plus that RPG element you so desperately crave is present there. Go out there and rediscover Azeroth through a brand new lens.
PS. Don’t hesitate to visit the classic forums, the posts over there kinda match yours so you should find some friends there.
In shadowlands we will be getting execute and slam and whirlwind back for prot war.
For me it’s the lack of synergy between spells. A lot of specs have a bit of a minigame so to speak. Fury tries to stay in enrage windows, Unholy sets up then pops diseases, Feral makes thing bleed then has abilities that do extra damage on bleeding targets, disc puts up shields then deals damage to heal, Blood DK puts down death and decay and then heart strike hits everything standing in it, Ele puts out Flame Shocks then has instant lava burst procs to mic up the rotation etc.
The ways spells interact and have synergy with one another can create some enjoyable gameplay and Prot doesn’t really have anything like that.
There’s talent synergy with Avatar and Tclap, real fun stuff too.
Are you referring to Unstoppable Force? Cause that’s not really what I’m talking about. That’s just a simple buff that also lets you push Thunderclap more often but it doesn’t really change your move priority. There’s no mini game happening there. The closest things I can find that Prot has for what I’m talking about are the Vengeance and Heavy Repercussions talents
Guardian is the most boring tank spec, followed closely by Monk.
IMO:
DK>Paladin>Warrior>DH>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Monk/Bear
