I’ve been leveling a warrior for about 1 week. I have been protection since level 10. I much like the devastate ability, but it seems a bit weak. I’m always in greens with multiple blues and prot seems to struggle to deal damage to kill enemies. I will see a mage kill 15 mobs of the same level at once. Until 20 when I got Improved shield block, it was a struggle to kill 2 melee mobs at once my same level as a tank spec. Warlocks can easily solo red mobs with instants, but prot has no hope of killing even orange normal mobs 3 levels above in full blues+greens. In wotlk which devasatate is from it did 120% weapon damage and applied 2 stacks of sunder. Now it is 60% weapon damage only applying 1 stack of sunder. I was expecting wrath devastate, but it was very overwhelming. Also is weird to see homonculus giving -1000 armor to mobs and doing other things while I need to use 5 spells with slow rage regen to get less than half of that. Just mainly wanted devastate buff for more spec fluidity. Thank you for reading.
Devastate was stealth nerfed right before SoD went live. It was originally 100% wep damage +10% per sunder stack.
However at 25 with some decent gear Devastate performs very well in the raid.
Are you using a high top end/slow 1h? If not that’ll make it better.
Also the Prot talent tree is pretty bad. Almost all Prot Warriors are just speccing into Arms or Fury.
At level 40 it may turn out to be decent with full points, but it’s very bad atm.
This is just Classic Warrior leveling in general. It’s always sucked.
No one levels as Prot and expects to do damage.
Scratch that, no ine levels as Prot. Period.
Prot warrior leveling is abysmal. Kill speed is way too slow and you still eat a truck load of damage even with the shield. Unless you’re doing bfd( even thats debatable) , just use a 2h. Most classes hits so hard and pull so much threat, it just isn’t even worth using a shield.
Same goes for paladin.
just pick up 2h, its infinitely better.
Warrior will almost always be a massive pain in classic. I’ve done it half a dozen times, and every time it sucks… eapecially on pvp servers since you’re way more gear dependent than other classes and have way too many weaknesses early on.
As for protection leveling, I’ve done that several times too. It’s great to get a compliment in a dungeon for tanking well, but it’s far from the meta way to level, so you’ll have to get used to that. As of right now, Protection isn’t really needed to tank raids. It certainly helps, but is not really necessary, but do what you find fun or feel like playing.
just go Arms DPS spec unless/until you plan to main tank raids. with the right runes, warriors of any spec can tank just fine, and you’ll want the damage increasing talents for leveling. focus on getting a good 2 hander plus arms DPS runes and you should be doing a lot better
Prot talented and runed spec will be slow going until around 40, it’s also a slow ramp up to 40 and starts to really pick up steam with gear after 50. You make a valid point and there could be some changes but I fear Prot Warriors would end up getting nerfed when the level caps raise and more runes are available.
Deep Prot was still good in casual guilds or anytime healers struggled with mana.
If you were on a sweat Horde guild without salv and with several other Fury Warriors in your raid ready to race you to the top of the threat meter, then you went Fury-Prot regardless.
It didn’t help with healers struggling with mana. It made fights take much longer due to threat caps, which made healing much harder
So to repeat myself: if you’re in some sweat guild with stacked ranked 14’s and no salv which legitimately requires you to have the highest threat ceiling possible and be the first to hit the threat cap, then you went Fury-Prot every single time.
Otherwise? Deep Prot’s more durable, easier to heal, less gear reliant, and puts out enough threat on paper.
only 3 warrior runes are actually good all the tanking ones are terrible even at keeping aggro
The “warrior is sooooo hard to level” meme is exactly that, a meme. Learn to cook, learn first aid, and buy a green weapon every few levels. And level as Arms.
You didn’t have to be in a sweaty guild to be threat capped as Horde with a deep prot. If your warriors weren’t absolutely braindead, they’d be capped by a deep prot tank lol
especially with how many greens (or even some blues) are on the AH, i didn’t have much of a hard time with leveling warrior
BS, if you alt a warrior its a much better time to level cause you have funds but the classic design of warrior is so trash
Warrior only becomes king once it gets geared. Leveling a Warrior solo is a slog.
It will get better once you get some BFD gear pieces but the journey from 1-25 is going to suck unless you buddy up with someone.
Well yeah if you twink out an alt of course it’s going to have an easier time. I’m going to assume OP doesn’t want to spend that money.
I only level as a tank spec. War pally druid dk dh.
Prot was always a poor leveling spec because the low level talents really aren’t required for any low level content, and they only become worthwhile as tanks start doing end game raiding. As you hit end game you will also find that Deep Prot in addition to not being a good leveling spec, is also a poor end game tank spec. It simply can’t maintain threat and doesn’t really improve overall survivability compared to a comparatively geared Fury/Prot warrior.
Hopefully P2/P3 will add some runes which really boost Deep Prot actually making it a viable spec, and where any runes added to boost it not the other specs. Since while in general warriors don’t need more boosts, deep prot certainly could use some love.
you should be leveling through dungeons and getting instant invites all day if you’re playing prot. your gear will always be great every level too.
and dont even start with me about 2hnd tanking. you’re just bad if you cant hold aggro and take almost no damage as shield prot. 2hnd tanking is for goofballs and half the time they only hold one or two mobs while the rest beat on the healer and dps.
