I’m going to need to tank in my group, there is no doubt in that no one is going to want to play tank so I’ll be the one to do it, I only ever have enjoyed playing prot warrior, I played prot paladin for a bit, wasn’t huge on it, I tried blood dk I found the rotation boring. I’ve always wanted to try out a bear tank, but with WOTLK i wanted to play a warrior but now I found out that prot warrior it TERRIBLE FOR WOTLK!!! and that upset me a ton because now I don’t know what I’m going to play !!! its darn annoying!!! any recommendations on what to do?
Druid would be a good choice. It would make it pretty easy to switch from Tanking/DPSing. Also, Druids make good farmers.
Yeah just sucks that this god expansion people seem to play it up as my all time favorite spec in the game is F tier and pointless to take into a team.
Prot Warrior is definitely the weakest tank in Wrath. But it is still viable. We raided with a prot warrior back in ICC 25 Heroic. I was the Prot Pally back then. Probably made it harder for us at the time but we still got it done and we did it with people that we have been raiding with us for awhile.
from what I understand its just you cant main tank as prot warrior, a prot pally will almost 100% take that spot 99% of the time. my thing is i’m playing with a newer group of people, lots of mistakes will be made so I feel like i’d have a better chance with druid tanking because of the added utility… but prot warrior is just fun to me.
Prot warrior is not terrrible LOL, I will never understand why people think this, the gap is not that big. It is also the most fun to play, which is more important because when you enjoy and care about what you are playing you will want to become a better player with that class. A very good port war tank is better than a middling pally tank.
if a paladin is a better tank than a warrior… you might be playin retail
Huh? Paladin is objectively better than warrior at tanking in wrath. Most enemies you face are undead and they excel at fighting them. Paladins are close to or at the top of tank/healing/and DPS charts in wrath, that is why you see a large number of people playing them.
Its just there is some dude named “rugs” you’ll see him when you look up a tank tier list he makes it seem really really terrible and that i’ll get one shot in mechanics with zero counter play.
Don’t listen to some random dude about his opinion on port warrior in wrath. Every 2 min you can reduce all dmg taken by 40% for 20 sec with a glyph. Last Stand every 1 or 2 min with a glyph. Have some of the best blocking ability with shield block every 20 sec. Constant interrupt, shield slam removes a magical buff. Plus other things. Prot warrior is a bit more gear dependent than Pally and DK but once you get to 3.5k gearscore you’ll be rolling through dungeons.
You’re right maybe I should just do it, its not meta but its what I know.
I main tanked as prot in original wrath and never had a problem.
There is druid, not sure how similar it is to warrior but you do get rage. Add a heal set and dual spec and you should be bis for finding a group.
could you do a boomy off spec build for damage or would you be better of just deep specing into feral and just going cat form to DPS.
Not familiar with Wrath and going to ask some warrior tanking questions. I have a 60 warrior alt and planned on leveling it as protection and then respec to arms/fury dps for raid. How is protection tanking in normal and heroic dungeons? Will it be hard compared to the other three tanks? Thanks.
Nothing about prot warriors is terrible in WotLK. Prot warriors get incredibly strong in WotLK. Don’t listen to people making meta lists based on pservers. These are the same people saying warrior dps would be c tier garbage in TBC…and now look at it, competing in top 3 each week on warcraftlogs.
If you want to tank in Wrath, and you actually want to be accepted as a raid tank beyond T7 content, then level a paladin or DK. Druid and warrior tanks in Wrath are just no where near as good.
Some people will tell you to play what you want, etc etc. but know this; with dual spec tanks will be EVERYWHERE. There will be no shortage of geared prot pallies and geared blood DKs. You will not be able to find a decent group as a prot warrior.
People saying Prot Warriors are bad in WoTLK are spreading some serious fake private server wisdom around. On Warmane, Block value was broken, so a Warrior’s viability was drastically reduced considering most of the spec revolved around block value.
People need to critically think and analyze the specs going on with Prot Warriors, they are very strong.
Prot warrior is fine in wrath. Paladins being busted doesn’t mean warriors suck. And it also depends on the content you’re doing as well. Prot warriors are very good for dungeons in general but are a little weaker in raids. But even being a little weaker, a lot of guilds used prot warrior MTs in wrath and cleared all heroic bosses with them. So play what you find fun. If you’re good at the class it doesn’t really matter much.
Why do people think tanking is like dpsing? People will take whatever tank is available. Almost no one is going to turn down a prot warrior unless you’re garbage.
