Hey Blizz! I got to do some testing today and I wanted to provide more feedback for ya.
- Overall in aoe the rotation does feel a bit slower but imo not too much. I would prefer the current state of things on live but considering your design goals and such I think this is a solid spot. I am a little worried about rage gen in single target however. I felt a little rage-starved on the second boss of Floodgate which has two targets for more bloodsurge procs/strat resets. I’d love to see bloodsurge/instigate be baseline or shield specialization become a one point node to free up our spec tree a bit. Rn at BEST we have one talent point we can move around which doesn’t allow for much flexibility.
- Our tier set bonus needs to proc more often. It seems to me the intention for our 4 piece is to allow for less shield block management since we get more CDR on Shield Charge. However I don’t think our tier set procs enough to allow this to happen. I didn’t notice any significant change in my shield block uptime on PTR. I think the proc rate needs to go up or we should get a full refund on Shield Charge when it procs.
- Violent outburst needs to be looked at more too. Having to spend that proc on thunder clap feels so terrible now that it only generates 50% more rage. As I said before I think it should just add a flat amount of extra rage generated or just make your next SS or TC generate a set amount. Alternatively it could only proc on SS and when it does it could give us a free revenge so we can try to get that SS reset. There is no situation where we want to spend outburst on TC unless we have no other choice.
- Side note, I think this whole situation could’ve been avoided by just giving prot 50 more max rage. Your design goals were to get us to press ignore pain less and feel more free to press revenge. I understand your viewpoint and the changes you made to accomplish that (lowering dev/strat procs, lowering outburst, etc.) but I think those changes don’t quite accomplish your goal and upset the long established playstyle of prot too much. The reason we press IP so much isn’t because we always want the max shield from it. We press IP because we don’t want to overcap rage and it feeds into anger management which = more shield wall CDR and avatar uptime. If we had 150 max rage, we could sit around that 80-100 area more freely and save rage for shield block uptime/having some IP going but ultimately this would let us shield slam and then revenge more often. SS is our best way of generating rage which means it’s our best way of dumping rage leading to more avatar leading to more rage and dps leading to more dumping rage, etc. etc. There are other reasons why SS is our best button but that’s a big part of it. So if you want us to revenge more, giving us more max rage allows us to do that. Again, most of the time we press IP isn’t because of it’s immediate defensive value, it’s to dump excess rage and not overcap. We have more max rage → we don’t need to dump into IP as much → we can press revenge more often. Because of how the math works out we just don’t have enough max rage to play with and taking the talent to increase isn’t worth dropping points elsewhere. To be clear, many people (myself included) like this rage dumping playstyle and the fast paced decision making of prot. But if you want to accomplish your stated goals I think this is a cleaner way of doing it!
- Quick rant about other tanks. Many ppl are very disappointed in the lack of Brew changes. There are a lot of good ideas out there to make that class better and while the purifying chi change is great the ox changes are not enough. If Brew is going to continue to be the tank with the most required healing it needs more self sustain (DF S3/4 two piece) or it needs to be sturdier. I’m hopeful for changes in season 3 but it’s sad to see Brew continued to be forgotten. I’d also like to point out (as many others in this thread already have) that coming at prot war from the angle of “APM” really derailed the changes and hurt community sentiment. Not only are all of these changes unasked for but when this was announced you also gave prot pal an entire tier set that is about spamming SoTR, another off the GCD button. Not to mention guardian druid has more rage than it could ever dump during incarn (at least when I played it in DF S4/early TWW). I understand the team might not have had time to make changes to those other classes but singling in on prot war when it’s middle of the road in performance on an issue that isn’t even an issue on top of paladin having basically the exact same “problem” in SoTR makes this feel so much worse on the players end. This is not me implying that guardian or prot pal need to be changed or nerfed in any way in accordance with this philosophy applied to prot war but I feel this is worth reiterating.
With all that being said thank you again for your continued support of the game! I do want to say that seeing our feedback being actioned on over the past weeks and Kaivax hopping in the thread was really great. It’s obv impossible to reply to every post but it’s nice to see that y’all are listening I hope my feedback is helpful and not too rambly haha and y’all have a good one!
