So I’ve played warrior to 60 and 70 many times and I’ve done arms/fury more times than I can count. This time around leveling my warrior I decided to do something crazy (stupid) different. I want to do a prot pvp build.
Now before all the people come rushing over and say “it’s been done before its bad” and all that. I want you to know that I fully understand this already and I am really just looking for a spec and build that would provide the most amount of fun given the spec.
So all I ask is some talent choices (I’ve already narrowed a few down) and maybe so must have prebis gear selections
The only advice I have: PvP with friends. If you solo PvP as prot you will get destroyed before you even know what happened.
Prot has some nice stuns and silences that can make the Allies lives hell.
But you won’t be doing squat for damage.
Understanding that youll be bad, and frustrated a lot at the beginning goes a long way. If you are a true tank you are used to taking abuse, and already have a willingness or are predisposed to “taking one for the team”.
My tip is to be useful even if it means your death. Heading for cloth wearers and fearing them/debuffing them and distracting them from your teammates with your sustainability will get you the most respect from your team. Its a tough grind brother
Appreciate the tip ty. That was typically the mindset although I can be stubborn and may want to go solo and prove is viable (even though it’s not) and I’ll probably be very frustrated LOL
My exact mindset rn
Do either if you guys think I should run a fast, medium or slow weapon for the build
Fast being 2 or lower
Medium is like 2.1 to 2.4
Or slow 2.5+
Gear is a huge factor but Prot warriors in PvP will destroy all physical dmg classes with ease. Flag carrying in WSG is super fun too. With one healer, some Faps, and a nifty stopwatch you are nearly impossible to kill. Your dmg output is not great but you bring a lot of utility in stuns and silences to the battle in a group fight. Basically attack their back line and ruin their day.
Talents:
I highly recommend “impale/prot” build (putting 20 points into arms). If you want to tank dungeons and raids as well. (If you want to tank at all “defiance” is pretty much required.)
If you want to play pure prot PvP build. 28/0/23 works really well too getting weapon specialization and improved hamstring.
Getting the “Tactical Mastery” is really helpful in PvP situations.
Skip “Defiance” and get 5/5 “Iron Will”.
“Improved Revenge” is pretty great too, 45% chance to stun in OP
“Improved Shield Bash” for the silence.
Gear:
Weapon:
Get the best weapon possible weapon you can. (swords, or maces are good for the talents spec.) I would get Quel’Serrar (2.0 speed). It’s becoming more affordable and is probably the best weapon you can reasonable get. If i had a Vis’kag I would use it. If you get rage starved you can swap in an offhand.
Shield and Gear:
Get your health pool as high as you can. Your goal is to outlast the enemy not burst them. If you can get tier gear that will probably be best. Ranking gear is also amazing. +Defense helps against melee.
Thankkkkk youuuu this is exactly what I was looking for.
My build was looking very different in terms of talents. I wanted to try shield slam but idk what the damage output looks like and if it scales well. 20 rage seems reasonable for an attack that deals 350+ but idk.
I was thinking qs or maladath in the long term but idk what to use before that
Enchants obviously crusader but do you think I should favor Stam over str where I can?
Do you think if I ran mostly dps gear with a shield that it’d be worth it? Or nah
Yeah, Shield Slam can do pretty decent dmg. I’ve hit for 500+ with it but that’s with nearly BIS gear. Impale prot is pretty solid for that 20/0/31.
You can also run 31/0/20 and do an MS/Prot build which is pretty fun.
Any weapon is going to have advantages and disadvantages. A faster weapon will mean more rage and slower will mean you hit harder. It’s situational. I’d go for the highest possible dps weapon and build around that. If you get your hands on a Deathbringer then MS/prot build would be great. If you are using a faster weapon then Impale/Prot is probably the way to go. QS is a good middle ground and its easy to get/works well for both.
Crusader is probably still the best weapon enchant. I can’t see anything really being better.
As for gear enchants I have +100hp on my T2 Helm and Legs. +8str on my T1 legs and Lionheart and switch back and forth as needed.
+100hp on Breastplate of Chromatic Flight and I’m still farming SGC which will get +4 stats.
Everything else is +Str
DPS gear works great as long as its plate. I use a combo of both and switch as needed. (Helm of Wrath vs Lionheart is a tough decision… 500hp vs 2hit 2crit and 20ap)
I use Flamguard Gauntlets and Battleborn Armbraces over T1 pieces.
Neck: Ony neck
Rings: Don Julio’s and Magni’s will.
Trinkets: HoJ, Blackhands Breath, PvP Trinket, Gnomish Cloaking Device, Nifty Stopwatch. As needed
There is lots of good plate gear that has high stam on it outside of raids that would be really good aswell.
Was thinking of running
Black dragons ale shoulders, legs boots
Sgc
Hoj
Bhb
Lionheart
Mark of fording
Don Julio
Painweaver
Omokk belt
Tht 12 str 12 Stam clok from scholo
The 1 crit bracers off timmy
And the ubrs plate 1 crit gloves as my bis
Maybe skull flame shield until draconian
Weapon I was thinking ironfoe
I’d go Battlechaser’s Greaves, Eldritch Reinforced Leggings, Spaulders of Valor for the Stats/Armor. Black Dragonscale gives up a lot of survivability for not much AP gain.
Other than that your list probably can’t get much better without getting raid gear.
Ironfoe would be amazing if you have it or can get it.
Absolutely stack stam (But keep Crusader of course.). Dont TRY to be a killer, try to be an annoying super turtle that either kills over time like a living dot or stalls forever until help shows up (Lead the fight toward your buddies or toward enemy NPCs, be a real pain in the rear. I loved playing that style on my blood dk.). Make engaging with you a time wasting stall fest for the enemy.
This give you many options to work with for a pre bis list, but you have almost everything listed already so your def on the right path. God speed in your journey.
Get immovable object for the +block value for more slam goodness. Get a slow ideally weapon so you do a little more damage on WW, but mostly just get the best wpn you can.
There was a video of Ciderhelm or someone doing Shield Slams for 1k+ back in vanilla by stacking block value
