Prot pally in 5 man dungeons

Oh okay, sorry

Thanks for the tips !

So the main problem for Prot Paladin in dungeons, and this generally regards the late game dungeons, once you lose aggro its very hard to get it back. Being stunned or possessed, etc. However Exorcism is a strong taunt vs undead, so they are kinda okay in Scholo and Strath. Just have some peeps with cc like frost trap, nova, etc. Also once you have Greater Kings casting on someone with aggro can build your aggro back up, if not outright take aggro.

You’re partially correct.

“Protadin cannot tank anything that has a threat reset of any kind or that requires taunt.”

  • This remains true in 5man dungeon content. However, In a RAID scenario, this is false. I have tanked nearly every raid boss in vanilla/classic as a prot paladin. My guild had three main tanks. A warrior, bear and protpaladin(me).

Raids

  • Molten Core: Every boss
  • Blackwing Lair: Did not tank Vael
  • AQ40: Did not tank Twin Emperors(range issue) or C’thun. I have tanked all other bosses to include all optional bosses.
  • AQ20/ZG/Ony: Every boss
  • Naxx: I have tanked Anub, Maex, Grand Widow, and Noth. We never made it further due to TBC-Classics launch.

That being said, I was in a guild who supported me in playing what I wanted to play and how I wanted to play it. No one thought that it was actually possible simply due to threat and the lack of taunt. However, as gimmicky as it is (because its objectively a gimmick), Spamming Greater Blessing of Kings on 13 warriors was broken for threat giving you 1,482 threat per cast of GBoK. Thats nearly 1k TPS not including normal swings, SoC procs, RetAura/Thorns dmg etc.

When off-tanking (or depending on multiple factors, even main-tanking) you would use the slowest 2h weapon you could find running the 0/31/20 build. Your SoC procs would be absurd for threat as its multiplied by 1.9 from imp.RF. Wasn’t hard to maintain threat as the MT or keep 2nd place as OT.

When it came to any of the BWL dragon trio, the warrior and/or bear would taunt it off of me, eat the buffet and I would take it back with a cast of GBoK. If taunt was on CD or it missed, I’d just bubble cancel the buffet.

By the time we finished Classic, fully buffed my stats were…

(0/31/20 Prot/Ret)
HP: 9201 Armor: 11,238 AtkPwr: 1321 Crit%: 32.1% Defense: 382
MP: 5222 Dodge: 24.06% Parry: 14.12% Block: 20.12% SpPwr: 163

With Holy Shield up and without redoubt, I had a 4.9% chance to be crushed. With redoubt, I was uncrushable.

I wrote way to much… Thanks for coming to my unexpected TedTalk.

I wouldnt want to group with a Paladin as tank. Sorry. Its just not in the cards until TBC.

hi i tanked eranikus as prot once and I also tanked deadmines gg

Raids need off tanks, bro.

I want to roll Paladin but I don’t want to be on Ally when Phase 2 drops again. I’ll wait for TBC prepatch.

prot paladins are bis for dungeon tanking, their aoe is unmatched. slightly worse on single targets like bosses because of no taunt but you get salv so yeah BIS in dungeons for sure

Prot pally is totally viable for 5mans, but it’s Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. Your judgement ability is your taunt n your hoj is your savior on a rainy day.

Even for 5 man dungeons ?

paladin tanks are amazing in undead dungeons , and even in others , if ppl grab threath just drop a salvation on them…they will cry about kings/might/wisdom told the to hold a bit , salvation or kick , you choose !

ya know whats funny is that I found tanking on paladin easier with 31 in holy instead of 31 into prot.

Holy Shock +judgement of righteousness make for a good snap aggro ability that can almost work as a taunt for getting aggro back.

I mean I support u because u know what ur talking about. Most paladin tanks do not. They don’t bop, they don’t off heal if someone needs it, they don’t put marker’s ( random dps don’t know what’s going on half the time in dungeons), if u wanna pally tank especially in a random dungeon, you gotta take initiative. :man_shrugging: There’s a difference between you and the rest.

in 5-mans, prot pally is one of the best.

It’s actually a solid mage cleave tank, as well. Everyone takes a drink break.

The amount of spreadsheets, testing, retesting, and community involvement to make it actually work was incredible. I have some screenshots saved that showed what I had in my bags at all times. From potions, elixers, flasks, (minimum) 1000 Symbol of Kings… and the sheer amount of mana pots. I simply dont have the same level of dedication that I had during the first classic.

Without a doubt it was fun. Going against the grain of the game, figuring out clever use of game mechanics to circumvent things like threat drops… like dropping a target dummy and BoP’ing it which for whatever reason, forced certain bosses to attack focus whoever BoP’d it.

Fun fact about Raid Tanking paladins, The Flurry Axe was Bis for a very long time until your gear caught up with what we were trying to do. Flurry axe would proc off itself, off of SoR hits, off of Reckoning hits AND off of the badlands flame enchant. This made gaining mana back incredibly easy when seal twisted on a wisdom judged target.

Worst boss in my opinion was Chrommaggus. His debuffs sucked. XD

This time around, I will be rolling warrior as I have not once touched the class since, well, ever?
