I’m looking for the best prot paladin leveling build for classic (anniversary) WoW. I’ve seen builds with Divine Intellect or Divine Strength and everyone says one or the orther are a must. Some builds go full Toughness, others Anticipation. Hard to know which build is better. Anyone can help ?
Consecration first then over to improved righteous fury. Dont worry about that commited to dps warrior ripping aggro off the mob, just hold aggro on the others.
Blessing of Sanctuary + Consecrate Rank 1 + Seal of Wisdom + Judgement of wisdom with the fastest weapon you can get.
You can use Consecrate higher ranks for more threat if needed, but monitor your mana.
Improved righteous fury and the + hit talent are real nice.
For tanking you do not need reckoning, the redoubt talent and improved shield block value is also super nice.,
You can use the same strategy with seal of light / judgement of light (also max rank) will allow you to pull massive packs of melee mobs and survive it solo with no healer.
This is the method I use for AE farming or Wizard cleave dungeons.
If you can get Hand of Edward the Odd and Skull flame shield; you will never regret it; I use them on my geared Era paladin to this day despite having a lot of really great gear.
Fire weapon is also BiS on most mobs that aren’t fire immune because the fire proc also triggers wisdom both the seal and judgment.
As fir Holy Str vs More mana pool, IMO mana pool is the safe bet.
Happy farming!
I was so surprised to learn Fiery can proc on both the weapon + righteous seal individually. I was getting 60 + 60 + melee one swing nuclear bombs in Elwynn feeling like a god.
If you want some flexibility in your play, check this thread out…
The short of it is, you can tank just fine with a 2h as a paladin and, thanks to Righteous Fury, maintain threat very well. If you’re good at the game and comfortable with target juggling you don’t even need to pick up consecration until Maraudon or so. Do keep a 1h/shield and SoR around for stronger packs as well, but for smaller packs and bosses you can just smack things with a slow 2h using SoC.
In gear I could only get from dungeons and PvP, I main tanked every dungeon in the game except UBRS with the spec linked at the bottom of the post. I’m sure I could have main tanked UBRS if I could have found some super geared healer to keep me alive and some patient DPS to manage their threat, but it was just easier to be an off-tank for that one. Everything else was fine.
A full prot build will hold more threat and take less damage, but I found it to be kinda tedious for questing and so that’s why I appreciated the flexibility that the pretadin build gave me
Its truly shocking how effective fire weapon is on paladin, its even good on 2 handers for the same reasons; it’s always proc’d seals and judgments even in OG vanilla and if you’re a Ret pala with Vengeance; because it can crit this can give you the vengeance buff also.
Would Consecrate level 1 and Seal of Wisdom be enough to hold threat though ? Or maybe I’m not getting this right. So you suggest that I use Consecrate level 1, seal and judgement of wisdom on cooldown ? I never tried, I will.
I always use Blessing of Sanctuary on myself and Blessing of Salvation on party members.
Right now, what I’m going is pretty intense on mana : I’m level 43. Pre-cast seal of righteousness, consecrate level 3, judgement, seal of righteousness. By that time, I have enough threat to simply auto attack with seal of righteousness on. Threat and damage are great, but I feel I have to drinnk a bit much though.
I’m a warrior tank but as far as I know, consecrate rank 1 is used for mana reasons
I know, but I’m wondering if it’s enough to keep agro. Right now, I’m casting consecrate rank 3, once and it’s enough, but it costs a lot of mana. I’m wondering if casting consecrate rank 1 on cooldown is less mana intensive. Like : 320 mana for rank 3 or maybe 2 or 3 times 135 mana for rank 1. Maybe casting rank 3 is totally overkill also, I need to try things out.
Consecrate
Rank 1 for mana reasons
Higher ranks for threat reasons.
“Eagle” labeled gear carries stam and intel- Good items to get while tanking for casting uptime.
I went intel and righteous damage in holy tree-
Bring tons of drinks to the dungeons so you can take a sip after every pull- you don’t have to drink to full- but you NEED mana to cast things.
I went prot from 0-60 and just finished recently the journey to 60. Tanked everything and it was great.
Still wearing thrash blade and proc is great
There are tons of warriors this season - But not alot of them are dungeon tanking. I felt like it was super easy to find groups dual spec prot and heals.
depends, R1 cons is generally enough to maintain threat, but you use max rank for generation of threat at first if needed, if your DPS are zugging hard. You will get the hang of it.
SoW / JoW are massive in respect to your function, this allows you to use other spells without as much worry to go OOM.
Try Judge seal of wisdom straight off the bat, then SoR (max rank) a few autos + Max rank Consecrate, Judge Righteousness then swap to Seal of Wisdom full time, and Rank 1 Consecrate. (decent snap threat for AE packs vs wizards, also for single target)
Think of your spell ranks like a throttle pedal in your car; more power = eats the fuel faster.
As you play you will get the feel for what rank of spell is needed.
Thanks a lot !
Blessing of Sanctuary or Wisdom ?
Depends on the situation… if its just single target like a boss tank and spank, I prefer Wisdom, but if its AoE Sanc is BiS because every time you block you do damage and in turn make more threat.
Sanc can be great for single target tank and spank also because it does make more threat, this assumes you’re not having mana issues. Faster weapons in this respect are best, and if you can get fire weapon this is even better on all bosses / mobs that are not fire immune because the proc can trigger judgment of wisdom / Seal of wisdom (just as in vanilla)…
If you’re gear is really good and you have tons of mana you can start burning mana on higher rank spells, but just keep an eye on your use… What I mean by burning mana is doing things like Judgement of Crusader + Seal of Righteousness and Max rank consecrate. You will get the feel for your character and how it plays and how to maximize your mana pool; this is the real magic of playing the paladin in PVE be that AoE farming (this is easy once you get the hang of it), or be that tanking dungeons. One thing is very handy tho, fast weapons and throttling your mana use to be in a state where you’re balance and your mana pool is not draining.
When I farm mobs my mana pool and health pool is fairly static, I will either have light or wisdom up on weapon and the opposite active on target so that I am not wasting mana. In this sort of AoE farm I will also use Blessing of Sanctuary to reduce damage and deal more damage… In this case I do not use Consecrate at all, because I am not in a big hurry since mobs do not respawn fast enough. This situation is handy because I almost never need to drink and only really need to occasionally cast a healing spell.
Something of note, Rank 1 Flash of light scales insanely well with healing power; just so you’re aware its 35 mana cost is so cheap, that when you factor in the 43% healing power scaling its kinda nuts.
If you have more questions, just ask, ill check back later.
