Prot paladin any good in classic?

How were protection paladins in vanilla? I was thinking about making a holy paladin but my wife informed me that she wants to play classic with me. She will be making a druid healer/dps and so i was thinking of going prot main spec, holy off spec.

Are they good for dungeons? Pvp? As in av. And off tanking raids?

Prot paladins are a decent tank up until lvl 60 raids. At 60 you’ll be an off tank and do pretty good once geared.

In pvp they were quite useless unless very well geared. You would run out of mana if you tried to heal and your damage output was negligible. In AV sure you could tank at the end, but if there is a warrior they will just pull agro from you making it irrelevant.

They made for really good tanks in 5 player dungeons, but less so in raids because of mana issues and the fact that they couldn’t reliably negate crushing blows against raid bosses.

You might offtank adds on some fights, but you generally wont be used to actually tank the boss.

In PvP playing as a tank isn’t necessarily good, but a hybrid Prot/Ret build that utilizes Reckoning can be very powerful.

Any prot spec was kinda garbage in pvp until Cata-Mop when they added vengeance and of course Warriors had gladiator in WoD. If you’re hard set to tank as pvp your role is pure utility.

This. If you want to pvp then go prot until reckoning is 5/5 then put the rest in ret.

Yeah their set gear was mostly geared toward healing and I don’t remember many non-set plate tanking pieces.

old problems , would anybody pay for this:face_vomiting:

So probably warrior then? What about druid tanks?

Playing a prot paladin is great if you play a paladin well. How much you plan on tanking late game will decide how many points to put into the different talent trees. If you want to tank exclusively though, go warrior.

Druid tanks suffer another problem but ultimately have the same fate as Paladin tanks unless geared up the wazoo.

If tanking is something you really want to do, role a Warrior, unless they announce class balancing.

Lol warrior it is then my good chaps. Also when i pvp my wife will be resto druid, my bff will be druid balance/resto and his wife always plays holy priest. Will that work ok as a dps warrior in pvp with this combo?

Prot paladins are great tanks. Don’t expect to be raid main tank though unless you have a friendly guild willing to support you. As prot you will be the only tank to be able to reliably AoE tank through dungeons Which can make 45 min strat runs a breeze with a good group.

Prot paladins also eat warriors and rogues for breakfast. In pvp, the reckoning talent will be your bread and butter as you get crit a lot. If you ever manage to get Thunderfury, you will put out a lot of damage quickly and can proc it more often than any other class with seal of righteousness up.

The majority will say Arms but furry worked but had a higher ceiling. One of the best PvP Warriors was a Furry Warrior, his name is Swifty, he still actually plays. The rest were Arms with Maydie being a popular one.

Mortal Strike though is a very good skill to have in pvp.

Hummmmmm good info. Well freak. Lol

In general you will be playing your paladin as a support character to maximize your benefit to a group. As a paladin, you can perform all 3 roles in a dungeon group by switching gear, or even provide emergency coverage as needed. You also provide some of the most valuable buffs for a dungeon group, mainly blessing of salvation as dps can really screw things and auras.

In pvp you provide support by cleansing all the nasty stuff off of your teammates and providing backup heals. Your buffs are also very extraordinary so don’t forget the life savers.

As a warrior you do 2 things: kill, or be a punching bag. Once you get slam at level 30 along with the enrage talent for some /sit action leveling gets so much easier. A warrior tank is probably the hardest to tank multiple mobs but only slightly behind druid. As a warrior you can put out the some of the highest dps in a raid setting (dps warriors will be very common though) while also be sought after for tanking because other than a handful of raid bosses warriors are the best tanks for raids.

In pvp you will have 2 roles also. As prot you will hold the WSG flag once the druid gets it back to base or tank the AV leader for everyone. Prot really doesn’t have much of a presence here but for down time it can be fun being unkillable with 10 players on you. With Arms or fury you will want to go 2 hand for the burst you can put out. With a healer and at the very least a paladin supporting you, you will be an unstoppable ball of gory death

Make the spec whatever you want to make it, put points in wherever you feel is valid.

It’s your character, and your first shot at Classic in ages. Play however you see fit!

It’s simple. If you don’t like Classic don’t play it.
