Prot Paladin is faceroll easy. Blood DK is much harder to do but I believe will have a greater real impact, at a might higher skill level. I feel like Prot Paladin you will have more solo fun, Blood DK you will turn fights.
Tanks are not easy to play in PvP but of those two choices Prot Paladin is the pick. Blood DK brings very little to PvP whereas Prot Paladin has decent single target damage and a truck load of off-healing and utility. While not the most mobile, Prot Paladin’s are better off than DK’s, unless something has changed? Neither are outstanding flag carriers.
I played Prot Paladin up to 1800 in BFA and it was totally viable and heaps of fun in BG’s as you can contribute in any situation. The Vampiric Aura legendary for Blood DK is the only thing that exists that might make Blood interesting in PvP - but it probably needs a buff.
Vengeance DH is honestly the best pick for having fun in BG’s. Great self sustain, good damage, a big cooldown in Meta and most importantly incredible mobility which is so important when being trained. Arguably the best flag carrier and therefore has a reason to be taken in RBG’s. RBG’s are actually looking good in SL from a rewards perspective so taking a desirable tank will be important.
That all said, playing a tank in PvP is no picnic and with the extra damage you take its generally better to play a healer or DPS spec.
Veng DH > Prot Pally > Blood DK
its doable but its a lot of effort for only marginal gains.
some of the new legendary powers and coven stuff seems like it will make it a little more viable. also death chain into venthyr aoe + bone storm + DnD is hilarious
Blood DK is significantly behind other tanks right now. Prot Paladin, Brewmaster, Vengeance are all ahead and even Guardian is going to be more viable with their group utility. Blood is looking to be bottom tier along with warrior for a while unless it sees significant buffs.
Where did you find that blood dks are significantly behind other tanks?
Personal experience on beta, having conversations with other tanks, and pretty much every ranking/rating anyone has done have all been pretty consistent showing blood DK towards the bottom of the list, with the exception of warrior.
Prot has way more defensives than us, and going off personal experience as my room mate is a Prot Pally alongside my Blood, their self healing is insanely high as well. Prot DPS is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than Blood as well.

You have a bonestorm/swarming mist moment. Other than that, blood dk damage is significantly under protection paladin and vengeance DH, still under brewmaster, somewhere around guardian.
You sound like you know more than me, do you think a buff to blood dk will happen anytime soon?
I certainly hope so. I"d love to main blood dk, as I have almost every expansion, but it is looking like there are many more viable options right now. That doesn’t mean blood can’t do content, I am sure they will be fine in most standard content, but there are considerably “better” tanks right now.
Blood needs about a 15% damage buff and a 10% armor buff to make them close to other tanks right now. They do have unique mechanics, and our death grip can make us invaluable on certain fights with adds. We may see blood rise in popularity eventually in mythic+ in certain “AoE uncapped” stacked groups. The bonestorm/swarming mist mechanic is a bit nutty, but at very high keys blood will just get punched in the face too hard and won’t have time to heal back up before they’re dead.
One of the easiest ways to improve blood is to increase the absorption shield from our mastery, but it can get out of hand at high gear levels, which is what we saw in previous expansions where blood ended up being unkillable because of absorption stacks.
Whatever happens, both blood and frost need some love right now (frost MUCH more than blood atm) to make them more competitive.
ive been having good luck running will of the necropolis. im essentially melee DR capped and close to magic damage DR capped with vers and rune tap at 40%. rune of sanguination is better then what people say as well.
utility death chain really good for group burn down and phearomones legardary power seems strong AOE CC on a 30 second cooldown with a haste steroid attached. i think we need improvements in runic power generation and a rework of heartstrike(cause its dog poop even when steroided up to 108% increased damage) for more deathstrike action.
i think the biggest roadblock is a lot of our legendaries are tied to our long cooldowns, situational, and relative to other classes…underwhelming.
Blood. Just to be annoying.
