Where do you see this? Which “number 1 world” is running masterful+IT?
Yay:
Masterful is more overall damage reduction than vers
Mastery is “cheaper” than vers (72 per rating vs 85 per rating)
If you play ret or holy you may already have some masterful or IT pieces
Nay:
Masterful is more rng than vers - if you don’t have wings up for that pressure point you’re gonna die. Block is also rng except in wings so can’t be relied on
Vers gives more healing through things like bulwark of light and impassive visage
You have more sources of vers from C&S (major+minor), Aegis, lucid minor
Vers is more flexible as you can happily mix and match vers and TDs at mid key (like that 22-24 range) levels where you don’t need a full stack, whereas masterful pretty much requires a full stack as it doesn’t interact at all with TDs
Masterful makes RP an enticing choice, which cuts out the big value you get with LD
Masterful requires a more specific azerite build than vers
You can’t block everything. Vers does affect everything (except like fall damage)
Having to stand in consecration is not as bad as ppl say, but it’s still a drawback
Vers amplifies any other random damage sources you might have like ruinous bolt or unbridled fury or an item with a proc, whereas mastery only applies to your class abilities.
Honed mind isn’t as good as surging vitality, but you shouldn’t be running either so this point is pretty irrelevant.
All that being said, this only applies to super high keys. People at those key levels are messing around with whatever they can to help them survive, they’re not necessarily min maxxing perfectly, and most are not actually theorycrafters. Raider io and similar tools are also very deceptive because they only show when someone logs out, so the build they used in that +27 deplete at the end of the day also looks like they used it for all their push keys that day despite the fact they’re changing stuff every dungeon.
If you’re only doing like your weekly +20 or mythic raiding, you should be using twilight’s devestations, as its ability to delete packs/targets/push dps checks will save far more resources than stat amps, allowing you to pull bigger constantly.
your post is pretty informative. I have good amount of haste on my prot gear. like 24-28% haste ( Depends on Gear) and 24% TD. But i still feel pretty squishy with 16% Versatility. As i mostly pugs so i am thinking to go safe route. So I am thinking to Change my TD to more Versatility Amp. Is it good strategy to go Haste+Versatility Amps Corruption for 16-18+ keys.?
nah not really. In pugs you have no idea what your group is going to be capable of, so you can’t like run a full self sustain build expecting your healer to make up the dps. TDs will be the best at removing dangerous pulls from the game so that you don’t bleed out due to people screwing up.
Vers’ value comes from adding mitigation on top of your base kit; it can’t save you from making a mistake and getting reamed by an avoidable mechanic or having your sotr down. Or if you can survive those mistakes because it’s a low key, then you didn’t really need the vers anyway. If however you have sotr up, and are popping cds for dangerous point, and kiting when you need to, and avoiding the avoidable damage and are still getting deleted through those tools, that’s when vers starts becoming valuable.
When I math out my damage reduction – from mastery DR, vers DR, and block – for my mastery, vers, TD sets I get the following:
Vers 40% DR
Mastery 61% DR
TD 36% DR
Keep in mind my vers set only has 36% vers amp and my mastery has 81% and more gems. I’m using vers as my pvp set so it isn’t as developed as my mastery set. Combine that with the fact our bulwark absorbs get buffed by vers however bulwark doesn’t scale with how hard you are being hit were block does.
When I sim the damage for my mastery, vers, TD sets on 4 targets I get the following:
Vers: 88,136 DPS
Mastery: 103,425 DPS
TD: 123,441 DPS
The formula I used for the damage reduction is the following:
1-[(1-(Vers_DR+Mastery_DR))((1-Block%)+(Block%)(1-BlockValue))]
This ignores parry and dodge but since they scale from strength I ignore it because it wouldn’t change by a huge amount.
From my experience playing with these sets in pugs/guildies in the 15-18 range:
I find TD to be weak over all damage increase is about 10k dps I contribute this to the RNG nature of TD. I find I take a lot more damage while in my TD set. I find my healing to be a lot stronger in vers and I feel about the same tankiness wise in vers and mastery. I also look forward to getting more vers to see what it can do at higher levels of vers.
Edit: My TD set has TD5 which is as much as I can run without going over 39 corruption.
He’s talking about Vince timing a 26 shop with three ITs and the rest masterful.
Why is running surging vitality bad? The current highest run from prot 28 (yard) features a full vers build with a surging vitality?
Ignore junkyards
Surging is adding on rng, versatile is consistent. Earlier on you might not have had enough versatiles so throwing on a surging to add on top of it is fine.
That being said, it does seem like some players are just taking the rng: they know if they don’t get a surging or a wings proc they die, but they also die regardless so they’re taking the more rng option and crossing fingers to live. For the highest of the highest pushers, that may be viable. We’re seeing a lot of high masterful depletes like that.
Yeah, that makes sense.
Interesting to see all his gear is mastery/haste. Seems like he’s trying to keep SotR up 100% of the time.
I’m going to stack up on IF for holy, but I think I’m gonna give mastery tanking a go since it will give me two tanks sets that I can see the benefits for each during different weeks.
Going to be fun to see the difference
