Prot in PVP

How is it? Mitigation against casters decent? I miss actually tanking in PVP back during TBC and Wrath before tanks became squishier than a non-SL warlock in vanilla! :****(

It’s one of the sturdier tanks and has a decent bit of burst going for it. You’ll hate life carrying a flag, though

NUH HUH. Stop this topic, the players and the devs don’t want prot in pvp so you better not play it ok ?

Just forget it exists or play classic.
Prot has been removed since the end of Shadowlands.

Prot is weird in pvp. It is considered a healer and has it’s own set of rules when queing for mmr i heard. (You cannot join in unless another prot is in the opponents team)

That is only true for shuffle, and it was implemented during a period where prot had heals on par with holy while having access to an on-demand silence with shield and being much sturdier.

The tank nerfs in TWW gutted the viability of healing almost entirely, but it’s making a comeback in a few brackets with decent burst and control, even if WoG is cheeks.

Would say I like the direction they’re going with tanks, but I can pump out similar numbers to a dps on my prot warrior if I spec for all damage, and it still has access to more walls and a huge ignore pain, which could become broken really fast and seems like a toxic meta coming soon if they give tanks any more damage (Minus brew. Please help brew, devs)

Bro you realize that mentality came from carry sellers that hated not being able to 1 shot and win matches solo right?
The sad truth is protection should be the target now because if you interrupt guardian it takes more dmg than ret.

This 100%!

I never understood the hate the wow community has for tanks in pvp. Tanks are one of the most beloved specs in pvp in literally every MMO except WoW.
They are the the CCing disruptors of your group. They get in the face of your enemy and keep them attacking the tank instead of you. CCing people, throwing people, knocking people down, tanking tons of damage, and doing an ok amount of damage themselves as well. Prot Paladin heals should be garbage but their damage and CC and able to ACTUALLY taunt players should be their main focus. They should be especially desired in RBGs.

Because tanks are not ususlly balanced. Tanks already have all the control and tankiness. They just need to do zero damage and healing and nobody would complain

Because of this

Prot Paladins at their best elimented the need for Holy or Ret to exist in PvP because they could heal as much as a Holy Paladin, for longer and for nearly zero mana and they could infinitely generate HP through Avenger’s Shield and Blessed Hammers, have spell warding and could bubble others.

They couldn’t do as much damage as ret but their sheer amount of interrupts through AS, Divine Toll and rebuke made them super oppressive as well as a talent to silence with AS. They were also tanky as heck and WoG healed for a bajillion HP.

Prot was incredibly broken.

Yes I dont understand why Blizzard is unable to give tanks a desired role in pvp in a balanced way like all other MMOs can. The problem is, if Prot did no damage, no one would want it on their team because the CC they provide isnt worthwhile as DPS/Healers already have an insane amount of CC in their kits. First and foremost, all tanks need an actual taunt ability in pvp. Like, force the target to only be able to attack them for a short period of time. make it so they literally cant tab over to anyone else during the taunt’s duration. That would be HUGE and give tanks a proper desired role without making them amazing at heals or damage.

To be completely honest though, Gladiator Stance for warriors in WoD was amazing and the best Blizzard has ever done to make sword/shield viable in pvp.

Completely agree! Great thinking!

Eh. Prot warriors had a great time to shine in wrath. Shield Slam dispelled and Shield Block Value was easy to get ontop of Armor Pen.

The only reason wod gladiator was op and played at all in pvp was the glyph that made shieldslam dispell. Once that got changed everyone abandoned the spec because it was no longer op.

I loved it even without the dispel. Was very fun and still did competitive DPS and stuns/mobility.

Thsts where the issue is. No tank should be competitive in damage with actual dps. I too remember the warriors in my highmaul raid all going glad stance because arms had just come out of the prunning absolute trash and fury needed more gear

Glad stance wasnt a tank. It wasnt able to hold aggro like a tank and it was as squishy as Arms. It was effectively a DPS spec with a sword and shield aesthetically.

So tanks get nerfed on every aspect of their spec. Which is absurd and shows how poorly Blizz is at balancing.

  1. remove the strong utility from tanks (shield slam dispel just as an example)
  2. then you remove damage (which I somewhat agree, tanks shouldn’t be doing as much damage as dps)
  3. Tanks have their self healing gutted (which again I somewhat agree, so that healers can have a role in healing the tanks)
  4. And finally Tanks have their defensives nerfed (I don’t agree with this. This is where tanks should excel. Everything else has been nerfed and/or ppl cry about having it nerfed, so the last thing tanks have is strong defensives. But we lost that as well in TWW.

So now all the healers and some dps are tankier than tanks. They have stronger defensives, stronger self healing, and get to keep their strong dps.

Need to get back to each spec excelling in their role: healers healing, dps doing damage, and tanks mitigating damage.

I somewhat agree. Again I dont evny whoever has to balance tanks. We all agree I think tanks viability shouldnt be their overperforming dps. Guardian druid, prot warr one shot and prot oala outhealing healers in SL and now bdks dealing more damage than unh and frost.

But they cant get their damage taken amp removed either because as it stands now they are actually tanky (not all of them). If the 60% somethinf modifier is removed they would never and I mean never ever die. Tough job

Yes, and I miss BFA and SL Prot Paladin.

Protadins have taken some heavy hits in PvP, with some recent small buffs. I would stay away from playing them in Shuffle, as their healing still hasn’t recovered from the nerfs.

When it comes to Blitz, they are passable. Their biggest issue is a lack of good defensives when holding the flag, as all of their bubbles become unusable.

All this said, I am still going to grind a couple up before the end of the season. I play 4 different tanks in PvP and Protadins for me are the most fun, and have to most utility in team play…not to mention pony is a good time every whenever I hit that button.
