Learning to tank, both in general and specifically prot paladin. I think right now my biggest basic play hurdle is that redoubt feels like its buff timer lasts slightly too short relative to holy power generation and I’m constantly struggling with it expiring by a second or two. Any advice?
Need more information. Your armory and RIO is all Ret.
Can you share your secondary stats percentages? Mainly haste.
Seeing your talent build is also kind of necessary.
The redoubt buff lasts for 10 seconds so you really shouldn’t be running out of this one in particular. The one that most people struggle with is the main SoTR buff that lasts for 4 seconds and stacks to 13.
I’m looking for fairly basic tips. At this point I’m still practicing tanking on heroic just to get a sense of dungeon flow and get comfortable with my binds.
Crit: 15% / Haste: 22% / Mastery: 26% / Vers: 6%
Trying to get crit lower for H/M but hard.

I’m sorry what @_@
I just beat on a target for like 2 minutes and I didn’t see any stacking of that buff in the UI, tooltip kept the armor buff static, not sure what I’m missing here.
SotR armor buff, it can go to 13 seconds.
Each time you press SotR it adds 4 sec to it, those aren’t stacks if that’s what you understood.
…Damn, I’m gonna have to be pressing that button a LOT more. Do you ever even let HP get to five as a prot tank under ordinary conditions, or is it more of a buffer overflow for like Divine Toll and other cooldown generators?
Buffer overflow to me, some might have other takes depending on how confortable they are with the spec.
If you struggle to maintain it, you might want to press it each time it’s available.
Further down the road, if you’re at 13 sec and have 3HP, you might want to prioritize something else.
Sorry, I can’t get this to work. Can you copy the entire thing and put ` in at the start and end of the link? (Left of #1 on keyboard).

Yeah, not terrible but definite room for improvement. I would try to keep farming/looking for high haste gear.
Just from dungeons:
- Witherbark Greathelm - Mist
- Emergency Stop Keychain - SV
- Anvilhide Cape - SV
- Bracers of Umbral Mending -GB
- Girdle of Somber Ploys - DB
- Ichor-Stained Sollerets - CoT
- Circle of Bone - GB
- Band of the Ancient Dredger - SoB
- Engorged Worm Smasher - NW
- Acidslough Bulwark - Mist
At this point in the season you should also have 4 Sparks for crafting which you can specifically stack Haste-Mastery. I currently have Bracers, Weapon, Shield crafted.
- Shield of the Righteous
-
- Slams enemies in front of you with your shield, causing (42.5% of Attack power) Holy damage, and increasing your Armor by (160 * Strength / 100) for 4.5 sec.
-
-
- The 4.5 seconds stacks every time you use it up to a max of 13.
-
-
-
-
- This is the baseline buff you get from using the ability without any talents.
-
-
-
- Talent: Redoubt increases your Strength and Stamina by 2% for 10 sec, stacking up to 3.
-
-
- This buff is independent from the other one and lasts for 10 seconds.
-
There’s other talent interactions with SoTR, but these are the main two that you seem to be mentioning or mixing up.
Do you ever even let HP get to five as a prot tank
You get to 5 very easily with Sentinel (“wings”) because Holy Power generation through Judgement is doubled during that time.

It’s the import code, FYI! But no problem.

I think I took it straight off of a wowhead guide, or it might have been icy-veins, figured if nothing else it was a good starting point until I knew wtf I was doing.

Thanks for that, didn’t know what it was called lol.

Yeah your build is pretty standard and nothing glaring. I think it’s probably the haste which can be resolved with crafted gear.
I would also suggest using Flask of Tempered Swiftness. It doesn’t have to be rank 3, I don’t even use rank 3 for +10s. The rank 1 and 2 are fairly cheap and increases your haste by 2384+. It will help smooth out the feel until you get your haste up, but even then you would want to use it.
I get not wanting to pop flasks for target dummies or heroics though.
Other than that, from what you said it seems like you just need to use SoTR more. When learning to play Prot, don’t focus so much on min-maxing your Holy Power. Just spam SoTR whenever you can, unless you are low HP then use WoG. Once you get that down you can start to focus on not going over the 13 second buff timer to maximize your Holy Power.
So weirdly finding out SotR was the buff that needed to be kept up all the time and not Redoubt – I got confused by discussions elsewhere that centered on ‘stacks’ – has significantly helped my sense of flow and I’m dropping both a lot less now. Before I kept feeling like I had an awkward level of dead time – not enough to be breathing room but too much to know what button I should be pressing next. Thanks a lot everyone!
PuGging’s been a fun experience. Most people are very nice about the fact that I’m learning. I always lead upfront with it before we start. Though the last dungeon, had a healer who laughed at my notice, immediately chainpulled, nearly wiped us in the first minute, kept chainpulling the rest of the way, and then insulted me for being bad and slow at the end. o.-
i would highly suggest logging and showing that log to the hammer of wrath classcord prot paladin channel for more help and tips.
one tip i can give right now tho is. you have to grow thick skin, the most dog players will always blame the tank for their own issues and their own wipes. dont feel bad for depleating keys either, this is how you learn.
many of my friends will gladly help you further your progress as a tank to unlock your potential. gl fren
