The easiest option is generally going to be two gathering professions to make a bit of extra gold while leveling. You really don’t get much out of the production professions while leveling. (For gear, usually by the time you can make it, you’ve got better from quests.)
Professions these days are divided up by expansion, so you don’t need to do the previous stuff to level up the new stuff. (Although it is a good idea to at least level up the base level of a profession to 75 to get access to the Darkmoon Faire quests when it’s in town.) So, when you get to max level, you can start a production profession right from the current expansion’s stuff without having to worry about the old stuff.
Of course, if there’s a production profession you really want to go with, there’s no harm in doing it while you level. Unless you’ve got a lot of gold (or a gathering alt) you’ll be best off pairing up any production profession with the gathering profession that produces the mats it needs.
Thanks for that clear explanation. I’m another returning player and I decided to level in Outlands. I came looking for answers after I couldn’t figure out tailoring. I’ve looked around for about an hour so far and this is the closest answer I’ve seen, so I really hope you can help! And OP, thanks for asking the same question ![]()
@Udiza, it sounds like you’re saying it’s not worth it to go with a production profession because quests give you better gear, right? What if I wanted to try to make good gear for myself or wanted to have more options or something? My problem is that I can’t even figure out how to get a level or type of tailoring that would allow me to match cloth items from where I’m questing with my tailoring level. Do I have to actually start with the older zones and work tailoring through them? Where do I pick up anything other than Cataclysm tailoring, which is what I’m being offered in Stormwind? Would I have to give up my Timewalking and level in Shadowlands to make usable and useful gear? What if I just wanted to make Blue Overalls, for example? Would I have to go through the classic zones to level and get a different type of tailoring? I’m just so confused.
If you have any further insights, I’d really appreciate it!
I just pick up a few recipes from low level zones for gear I’m interested in. I don’t put a lot of effort into leveling professions for lower level expansions unless there are particular items I’m interested in learning. E.g. I might usually level BC engineering enough to learn the Zapthrottle mote extractor and I might max MoP engineering to learn the recipes for the BoE mounts.
Gear making trainers, such as tailoring trainers have recipes you can learn to make items the can raise or lower the ilevel of a piece of gear to make it have the stats to be usable by a higher, or a lower, level character.
EDIT: the Darkmoon Faire has monthly profession quests that give +5 skillups points to your highest expansion level professions. If the highest expansion you have learned is maxed, it gives points to the next highest. Easy skillups for minimal time.
To get the DMF quests, you needed to have at least level 75 skill in the basic, vanilla, version of your profession. I don’t know if that changed since SL has released.
Some things have changed since the original post a year ago. (For one, at some point they changed the Darkmoon Faire quests to only require skill level 1.)
More importantly to your situation is the fact that they’ve added optional reagents, which while leveling can include tokens you can make to set the level of an item to something relevant to you. (I think the highest level ones will set stuff a bit below level 50.) So, in theory, any expansion should be able to make useful gear for you. It’s not something I’ve played around with much at this point to know how it compares with questing gear.
As for learning professions, each expansion will be taught by trainers in that expansion. You will need Vanilla skill 1 to learn any of the other expansions. So, the BC trainers will be in Outlands, Wrath ones in Northrend, and so on. Vanilla and Cataclysm stuff are taught by main city trainers. It can be a bit weird with the interface, though. As both Vanilla and Cata now start at skill 1, they get jumbled up a bit in the window. So, if the next Vanilla recipes are at a higher skill than you have, the low skill Cata recipes will show up at the top of the list. If you level up your Vanilla skill a bit more, they’ll pop up to the top once you can learn them.
