I’m rolling a warrior in classic but i’m still unsure about my professions. I have leveled to 60 in 1.12 but have not touched much end game PVE besides 5-mans. Also have only done gathering professions in vanilla because I was a scrub.
I originally wanted to go herb + alch so I could be self sufficient when it came to consumables. But now I have looked into it and thing engineering is a super good option for the tanking/pvp consumables and items.
How realistic would it be for me to go Alch+Eng on my main with no gathering professions? Would it be too hard to make gold? And if that’s not a good option, should I go herb+alch or mining+eng considering that I will be raiding and (maybe) tanking.
Not to downplay your question but professions comes down to “What do I not want to rely on others to get”. You wont make much money with engineering as most people that use the stuff from that profession are already making themself. Alch is a great money maker as everyone wants pots.
You’re going to be hard pressed to come up with the gold required to level and then produce auction worthy items for both professions without gathering raw materials yourself or striking up a bulk discount deal with another player.
EDIT: Also wasn’t a lot of the Engineering stuff in Vanilla BOP?
True, but I will always have to rely on something. I’m not super familiar with the End-game classic economy so idk how expensive it will be to just buy ores+herbs from the AH rather than gathering them myself.
Yes! this is the main reason i’m leaning towards engineering. Most of the good bombs and grenades require engineering to use or are BOP. Same with the useful gear you can craft with it.
If you don’t want to get the gathering materials: strike up a deal with someone who is doing the gathering. Usually a guild mate. This will help as you will get a # amount of mats for # amount of money instead of always having to risk over paying in auction houses.
There is a lot of very good stuff from blacksmithing that your guild will need, but most if not all of it is BoE so chances are somebody else will be able to cover those needs.
Engineering / mining is a good choice but its not gunna make you a lot of money until you start sellng excess ore.
Engineerng / alchemy is a tough sell. Alchy can be very profitable but you will need an alt to gather for you, this brings up a problem.
You can only track one thing at a time in vanilla/ classic. So making an alt mining / herb is not the greatest idea.
run two chars and swap them out at the inn for rested xp. have the other alt be easy to play and gather with (hunter) then learn herbs and ores on the hunter. when hunter is playing, farm the herbs and ores and send to your engi/alch. camp hunter. login engi/alch, make stuff, rinse wash repeat
Alchemy is a vital profession, as always. My personal preference is that if I’m gonna have a crafting profession, I take the gathering profession that lets me supply myself. Failing that, you could have an alt that’s mining/herbing/Leatherworking and do just funnel mats to your main.
Engineering is a really strong pvp profession in vanilla, but doesn’t really offer anything if you want to make money. Leatherworking, blacksmithing and alchemy can all be powerhouses if you get certain valuable recipes, and alchemists can potentially make a killing on arcanite bars.
Yeah that’s my issue. If I can find a good guild it won’t be a problem, but if my guild is lacking on professions i’m going to have to be self sufficient.
