I am currently doing Blacksmith, but I’m not seeing any real value. The only item I might be able to make gold with is the mount chassis, but that hasn’t dropped for me yet.
Would Engineering help me with some of the general flaws in Ret like gap closers/speed boosts ect? If Engineering still does have little boosts like that I’ll go that path. If it doesn’t what would be a good profession?
If you aren’t doing any raiding id say alchemy and herbalism pots sell and sell fast on Tuesday . Gear crafting is a waste if you don’t raid as you won’t be able to craft the 440 gear

Professions offer absolutely no combat benefits with the exception of engineering, which gives you a turbo belt which is only usable in non-competitive settings like random BG’s. Engineering offers a goblin glider as well but consumable versions of it are available to everyone.
Engineering is fun but it isn’t particularly profitable and will do nothing for you in environments where rating is concerned. I personally always run engineering because I play a ton of randoms and I usually pair it with enchanting.
It really depends on what kind of pvp you are talking about. For rated pvp BS seems actually pretty good since you can get socketed 440gear with the right stats, sockets are “yuuuge” bonuses atm.
If you plan on spamming bgs like me or doing some world pvp, Engineering is the best choice for the boots and depending on your server, you might be able to make it quite profitable (made around 1.6 mill gold selling mounts when 8.2 launched, most gold I’ve ever had).
I was inscription myself…However with the announcement that shadowlands will make armor crafting great again, by letting you pick the stats for crafted gear, I have just switched to mining/blacksmithing.
However, if you want to do like rated bgs/arenas seriously, then yeah engi will help you out. Be ready to dish out some major cash though, engi ain’t cheap.
I didn’t see a speed boost ability in engineering when I checked the other day. Is it still in there?
Cata engineering, it’s kind of split between expansions.
There was a time when professions were worth it for their combat benefits… back then I loved skinning and herbalism for the abilities.
Today I have herbalism and enchanting purely for cost savings and money-making purposes.
