So… besides I guess keeping the profession level what is the actual use or purpose behind this feature? I recently had dropped a profession I had on this character dating back to Burning Crusade only to find out that the profession restore doesn’t really do a darn thing… I lost several recipes that I can never get back because they aren’t in the game anymore. I haven’t had a lot of time this expansion to play and level multiple characters to play around with professions so I figured what would this hurt with the whole relearn a profession thing in now.
Maybe there was some warning I missed somewhere but with all the hand holding Blizzard likes to do with their layers … it sure would have been nice to have been warned “hey if you unlearn a profession you will lose all recipes and will not get them back” or something along the lines to get my attention that this was a terrible idea to do. I mean I lost recipes that just are unobtainable anymore.
I can’t imagine being a Alchemist and swapping only to decide to come back and have to regrind the vial of sands or something all over…

Tomes were introduced in Legion because the majority of the patterns came from non-repeatable quest rewards rather than the trainer like they had in previous expansions.
If you choose to drop a profession, you could re-level it at a later point, using the tome to re-learn all of the Legion starting patterns. Without it, you would not be able to learn the additional ranks tied to those starting patterns or craft most of craftable items in Legion.
The tomes were poorly worded and never intended to allow players to freely swap professions. They still exist for BfA gathering professions as all the ranks are quest taught, but for the most part, Blizzard has vowed no more profession quests, at least it appears for crafting professions. Which is a shame.
Yeah I couldn’t find a lot of I guess clear information about the whole profession swap. I do really wish there had been a better warning about it before this all happened. I wouldn’t expect to be able to freely swap back and forth but even a cool down period would have been better then this. I thought the profession re-learn would at the very least keep my skill level from the past expansions or allow me to get something to reapply the levels… nope it’s just starting back over from square one. I guess it’s my own fault but this was all a confusing mess.
