Problematic Aethas Sunreaver Dialogue Must Change

With all the talk about censorship, and “turning women into fruit,” I feel it is a good time to talk about something in the story that has bothered me for a while. I did not have the courage to post this on GD, due to fear of people not taking this seriously, but I have mustered it now. I hope anyone reading this keeps an open mind.

During Legion, in 7.2, they added quest chains for each Order Hall campaign, where each class recruits an extra follower. For Mages, it is Aethas Sunreaver. He was already an important lore character before, as I’m sure many know. There is dialogue from NPC’s during this chain that is very problematic.

In a quest, called “The Nightborne Apprentice,” near the beginning of the questline, Aethas sends you to speak to his apprentice, Arcanist Ryanna. You have a dialogue option labeled “Tell me more about Arcanist Ryanna.” His response is this:

"I discovered her quite by accident, really. Er, well, she discovered me.

I got myself into a bit of a… situation… with a harpy and a banshee, and… oh nevermind.

Anyway, Ryanna freed me with some very impressive spellwork. And then asked to join the Tirisgarde.

How could I turn her down?"

Now, the dialogue from Ryanna herself reveals the incident. He was naked, in a harpy’s bonds, where they were both arguing about who got to “play with him” first, until Ryanna saved him. Her dialogue, when you ask her how she met Aethas, doesn’t treat this attempted sexual assault seriously.

"Oh! I came upon him in Tel’anor caught in a harpy’s bonds without a stitch of clothing! Ha!

The harpy was so busy arguing with a banshee over who got to play with him first, that they did not notice me at all.

He looked terribly uncomfortable, so I intervened. And the rest is history!"

Her dialogue here is absolutely disgusting. “Ha” is not something you should ever say when you talk about the attempted rape of someone. It does not matter what their gender is, or how attractive you consider the perpetrators to be. “Terribly uncomfortable” is also an understatement. This is a rape we are talking about!

Blizzard, it is perfectly fine to have mature themes in your game, but things like this must be treated with tact and respect by the narrative. Malygos’ incident with Keristrasza was not laughed at by any character, and treated as very sad. The fact that you have a friendly NPC talking like this, in a game where we are “champions.” shows that you yourselves do not take this seriously. I believe this is a reflection of the “frat boy” culture at Blizzard.

To summarize, this dialogue needs to be changed. It treats the attempted rape of a major lore character as nothing more than a funny accident.

Nah, the quest was funny and should stay intact.

Like am I the only person in existence that laughs at trauma and terrible experiences to cope after the fact and everyone is okay? These type of posts make me feel weird lol.

She isn’t “coping.” She is laughing at somebody else’s SA

I don’t know to me, that sounds like a natural response to make something dark more lighthearted tbh.

It’s a rape joke, for crying out loud. You would not say this if the genders were reversed.

Yeah, why OP think people shouldn’t do that? :man_shrugging:

I was agreeing with her, OP. :man_facepalming: I was genuinely asking why you think people shouldn’t be allowed to make jokes like that. Even as somebody myself who dislikes them myself and finds them nasty, i’m not going to sit here and tell you what you can and cannot do.

It is about how the narrative frames it.

I would. Especially if it was as something as silly as one line of text “ha” could mean many things. One being “well I guess it’s a good thing I was there!” or being placed for relief. People don’t like things to be all moody and dark.

I don’t know about you, but when i read that quote you’ve quoted in the OP, i don’t know where you’re getting the whole “He’s naked, it’s a sexual assault, it’s a rape joke” sort of thing. For all we know, this line could have a different meaning that is in no way sexual.

It says that he was “stark naked,” and they were arguing about which one would get to “play with him” first. There’s only one implication you can really get.

People really need to go back and read quest text from literally every expansion.

There are loads of stories and quest dialogue that are honestly really surprising to read. Not that I’m in favor of removing them, but some old text would really be questionable in Blizzard’s current climate. LOL.

Can you quote and link that? Because it’s not in the quote in the OP. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Only word of “Naked” i found is from you…

My bad, WoWpedia, is what said he was stark naked. The dialogue says “without a stitch of clothing.”

Hrmn…

On the one hand, this is a game, a fictional universe. Ryanna’s reaction in re-telling the story is probably very different from her reaction at the time these fictional events unfolded.

On the other hand, there were blatant cases of male workers at Blizzard being harassed by games of, ‘Gay Chicken,’ and what not. I don’t think there is harm in removing this dialogue at all, really. If you don’t play a mage I don’t think you can even see it. I do think it does set something of a negative tone as far as cases of male abuse victims go. Aethas clearly doesn’t want to talk about it, as most men don’t. In that regard, Ryanna’s gossiping about it and laughter is certainly insensitive. I’d argue it’s about as bad as passing out naked photos of co-workers at a party, except the game is fiction.

Yeah, I’d say remove it. Nothing is really lost in the process. That or alter the dialogue at the very least so Ryanna asks you not to spread it around but is concerned because Aethas isn’t talking about it, and then have her act more outraged than amused.

when they said play, are you sure it meant sex and not death? cause harpy’s are too small for that with a belf.

why would they strip him naked if they only intended to kill him
