So I am playing again for the first time in a while and I noticed something odd. There’s no random chests anymore. I haven’t come across any in Elwynn Forrest or west fall so far.
You know the ones…at the end of a mine or in a mob camp. They didn’t have much in them…some food or ore or herbs and a bar of silver. Anyway, anyone know why they were removed? Seemed like a really innocuous thing to change.
Im not sure about the open world, but there are still chests that spawn in old dungeons. plenty of chests marked on the mimimap in the open world from WoD onward, but im not sure about open world chests before that.

Chests were removed due to censorship regulations. Oh wait… you mean treasure chests…
Quite frankly don’t know. True that I haven’t seen any. Could be one of those ninja nerfs they do sometimes.

Could also be that, due to how heavily CRZed everything is now, you’re simply not seeing them because other people are beating you to them without your knowledge.
Chest are still there just not like they used to be, I recall duskwood used to have a slew of chest under the trees
Btw they give some hefty xp like 9k rested
They are there - just really long spawn timers. Have to be pretty lucky. Have some toons on argent dawn (dead RP server) and I find them all the time… most full/high pop servers they are prob being farmed for transmog - or just being picked up from higher thru traffic.

I’ve come across a few of those in the open world, leveling my lowbie toons. The best part about them are the XP they’re worth. I think I cracked open one on my fat panda Monk and it was worth 30k. Granted, he was well rested, under the influence of the Monk daily XP boost quest, and a panda for more XP gaining, but still. 30k from popping a latch…
I would agree with the others who are saying it’s about long spawn timers and server population. The last one I found was in Elwynn in the circle of stones on the island in the lake. As far as I am aware, that isn’t a particularly quest-heavy area and it’s off the beaten path to Redridge Mountains.
Chests are now less frequent but drop better than average items (scaled to zone level) and reward XP. A change that came with Cataclysm. They are pretty rare especially with CRZ, but if you do manage to snag one it’ll be worth it.
There are still random chests but extremely rare, I’ve come across some while leveling my rogue in azeroth
They are still there, I found 3 while leveling my Nightborne through Classic Azeroth.
I got some good transmog too
As a person who levels alts for fun, there’s still chests.
They stopped being a thing in dungeons late TBC / beginning of Wrath, due to supposed stealth farming abuses.
OP here. Nice to know little things like that are still here and a bit more useful by the sound of it. Thanks for the replies!
Way more rewarding to open a chest in Westfall than any 120 zone… I mean there could be an uncommon item in there!
Honestly at max level chests are worthless. They give like 20 war resources, no loot, and they’re not even hidden. They just appear on the mini map.
World chests used to be a really exciting thing to find, and now I don’t even stop to collect them. Not worth the time.
Some low level ones still exist though! Those do have some loots.
