I have had issue with distance on the target and instances where they won't attack due to funky floor issues. If you can't place totems where the mob is due to "no path" you might have problems with the elemental

Doesn’t look like it’s floor issues either. I tried using the training dummies in Orgrimmar, and they still wouldn’t attack automatically. One of my guildies thinks it might be an addon, but I have no idea which.
It's really clunky i do have to press that every time after i make it cast Meteor and it often decides not to attack and wants to follow me instead.
Movement makes it far far worse. Try not to move much.

You dont turn it off. You select another option. There should be three. Assist, Defend, Passive.
I am not meaning for this to sound condescending, just the way you worded your response; maybe you think it is a toggle like the other pet spells?
I do agree with Luladin, make this macro.

It should make it attack your target even if it is on passive.
I use to use this on my mage to keep it from breaking polys. I always kept it on passive.
My elementals I have never had an issue with because they smart and stop attacking my hex.
There is also a macro I'll post when I get home that I have to re load you pet bar. I needed it a few times on my lock when saving my pet for double spell lock and the new pet wouldn't have a pet bar.
It might help here if you can reset it.
I had the same problem tonight. running Av and fighting a beast master hunter in one of the bunkers. I just started using Primal Elementalist and when I summoned my fire elemental he just stood there. I checked to make sure it was on assist and it was. I attacked the hunter several times trying to kite him around the pillars to get gaurds assist and my pet did nothing. His pet on the other hand had no trouble attacking me while he was out of los. I guess I shouldn’t expect anything else since its the shaman class and no one cares about it.
I had the same problem, is your fire blast ( I think is its name) off of auto cast? That was my problem, since almost all of its damage comes from fire blast, when it is off of auto cast, the ele just stands there and the attack button flashes red.

theres a few options for the problem here.
as stated, maybe you have the actual passive on, which can only be toggled while the pet is out, which means using the cooldown.
the other main thing, blizzard are idiots and tied the earth elementals taunt/punch thing to the fire ones main attack, meaning if you toggle the taunt off of auto cast, the fire one will have the fire blast turned off too. i dont know how they did it, but they managed to make pets even bigger problems.
My problem is that when i move to avoid a mechanic, my greater fire elemental decides to stop attacking and follow me. Is there a way to stop that?
Replace with this macro and double tap
Will work with fire elemental or storm depending on talent

I think casting meteor will put your pet in combat automatically, assuming anyway since I occasionally had the same problem and this fixed it.
If using this with storm Elemental, allow 3 seconds to let the Call Lightning cast finish before hitting it again for Eye of the Storm.
This is exactly what I was looking for thanks! without this the storm elemental decides he wants to cast wind gust. was having problems trying to get him to cast call lightning right off the bat and this solved it!

OMG Thank you! This was the problem since one of the early BFA patches. Blizzard fix your bug! Fire blast is not the same as auto attack. If it is, in your minds, then update your tool tips and pet bars.
Well here it is 02/2023 and I found this thread because I have this problem.
The other problem I want solved is how to get blizzard to gaf about anything that matters to playerbase, or fix problems that absolutely would not be that difficult to solve.
