Priest or Shaman?

Hi guys, currently my main is a mage with some T1/T2/BIS and I’m getting a little bored queuing for bgs all day, so I’m rolling an alt (might eventually become main), I’m looking at priest or shaman.

Mostly for PVE raids (not much of dungeon), and PVP (mostly BGs not much of wPvp), I like bringing utilities to the group (like mages food and ports etc).

Shaman has an interesting gameplay with totem utilities (love the play style) and chain heal, also love the animation on chain lighting and lighting bolt) but it’s melee playstyle is a little turn off for me as I’m all in for a nuker (don’t mind being clothies) and the melee part is what I’m less keen on (unless it’s completely optional)…also no HOT not sure if that’s ok…

I’ve also read that priests are the core healing class and that’s also quite important as I don’t want to play one jack of all trades, master of none…and priest is arguably the no1 1v1 class (not important to me as I’m almost always only in bgs), but my concern on priest is respec, holy for heal and shadow for pvp…but I’m still positive as I don’t mind healing in bgs…but I think I’d be more keen on one that heals party (like chain heal), not sure if priests should focused on target healing or aoe healing…

Also important that I’m looking for one with easier rotation (pve and pvp) and preferably one that I can gear easier (coming from a mage with lots of competition in gears), also most importantly one that has a fixed build to be used in both raids and pvp (I’ve read about holy/shadow priest and resto/ele shamans but I’ve got very little knowledge in these 2 classes)

Please share your thoughts, tyvm!

You’ll never be turned down from groups or raids as a Shaman.

  1. They are super easy to gear up - you can wear mail, leather, and cloth.
  2. You can heal dungeons and raids as Elemental - you don’t need to respec if you want to do multiple activities a day. Rank 1 Chain Heal and keep Windfury down.
  3. Shaman absolutely slap in BGs. Elemental Shaman are well-known to one-shot just about every class consistently. You also support your team through totems and off-healing.

The only downside to shaman across all specs and activities is mana. You will use a lot of mana potions, dark/demonic runes, and barrels of water. If you’re cool with spending money on consumes then I think you’d be happy with the class.

Would you rather:

  1. Smite (later Mind Blast), SW:Pain, wand wand wand wand

  2. Lightning, Shock, autoattack

???

Either is good if that’s how you want to play. And I do like leveling Priests and Shamans…

Thanks! But I read priest will never get turned down too yes?

Is this the infamous ele resto 31/20 I’ve always seen it elsewhere? Does it involve any melee or I can go all range?

So going alchemist would help?

Very much rather full range casting, I just can’t melee, but I like the utilities from shaman, and also less pressure from healing MT in a raid, and instead focus on group heal and buffs etc…Priest would feel much closer to a mage which I’m familiar with…the only thing holding me back from a shaman now is the melee part

shaman, the world is yours

There’s a lot more priests out there, so we aren’t in high demand.

BUT

Healer burnout in late classic is real

So can I confirm that at 60 shaman doesn’t need to go melee if I stick to ele resto for raids and bgs? also ele resto is viable for both raid and bgs without needed to respec?

Or still have to go full resto for raids?

Depends on how many shamans the guild has, and on progression you’ll likely have to go full resto.

But ask the guild how they feel about you going ele/resto during farm content

There is never enough priests due to dispel ability alone… however the same applies for shamans and totems(WF). It really depends on how you want to heal imo.

Thanks, which means both healers are also highly sought after, so now it boils down to which play style I prefer. As of now, I’m liking the utilities and totem dropping to help the group, but someone mentioned about demonic/dark rune which will be a hassle to farm (can’t even buy with gold). I forgot to mention before playing mage as my main, I had a 60 warlock with T1s, initially it was ok to prepare shards but when almost everything uses shards (although it could be obtained fairly easily via dungeon/raids) but after a while it became a chore…I prefer doing something all the way our without worrying too much about consumables, also food/water, hence I went with the mage and I’m happy now that I can use unlimited food water etc, even pyro is free compared to soul fire which costs a shard…

So when it comes to these 2 healers, I’m looking for something similar, don’t mind the boredom, just something that’s relatively easier and less headache/pressure to enjoy…also the insane mana drain on shaman is a concern, but I doubt priests would be much better in that…lol

P/S: do priests need to worry about any specific consumables to cast or buff etc?

Ele/resto is primarily a caster.

The only time you’re going to be using melee as an ele/resto shaman is when people are in your face as a filler between shocks or in 1v1 fights against casters like mages for spell pushback and chip damage because you cant really get away with trying to spam hardcast spells against a mage

Its not really a melee heavy spec, but in pvp at a higher level you will want to be melee weaving with flametongue on your weapon but its in no way your “go to” plan of attack, outside of niche situations
