So I finally tried out priest and figured they are a money pit. Not only do they get a spell upgrade every 2 levels but even if your going going to solo i feel like yuh basically need every spell. Yes not getting the obvious will save maybe 5g but still. Why does priests cost so much to level? Ideally I want to level in dungeons bc I’m slightly new to healing which is good bc I haven’t met a single decent tank unless I’m 30+.
You don’t.

Take skinning and skin every single body you encounter. That’s how i leveled my priest with almost all abilities and mount
You can get by learning Shadow word pain, and shield for a good chunk of solo questing. Just need wand spec learned and spirit tap, anything else is not needed until way later. You also don’t need to be holy until basically max for healing. Priest leveling is kind of a slog to get through, but it’s actually way easy. Dot shield and wand is all you need.
Priest has a ton of things you don’t need to train. Things like mind sooth, the shadow buff, heck even some of your heals don’t really matter.
Ive been leveling as disc, basically just keeping renew, flash heal, and whatever big heal you have trained and then Holy fire, SW:P, Mind Blast, and Ive opted for Smite as well in case things get a bit hairy.
Obviously wanna keep your shield and fort buff up too. Heck you don’t even need to train the different levels of rez, all you really just gotta have is rank 1.
If you enjoy playing a wand simulator priest leveling is for you
I skipped quite a few spells while leveling. That said, priest was cake leveling compared to warrior (which was what I got to 60 the first two times I played). Get spirit tap in shadow tree, wand spec, and buy yourself a decent wand and you’re set to pull yellow mobs non-stop without sitting. A warrior could have decent gear and still need to bandage or eat after every pull.
I got to 20, leveled up my fishing and spend an hour a day in Tanaris fishing Winter Squid to throw on AH at about 5 gold a stack, and also sell the other fish I get. I make about 10 gold a day doing that and have trained everything, have runecloth bags(Because when I can afford better I can send them to an alt.) and loaned guildies gold to get their mounts.(Hope they pay me back by the time I hit 40! lol)
Leveling is expensive, but I learned back in the day to spend a bit of my time farming gold when one of the best toons I’d ever played with was having to choose which of his items needed repairs most because he couldn’t afford to repair everything. (That was during WotLK. I don’t see the option to just repair one piece in classic)
You would be unable to heal dungeons adequately without prayer of healing. That would be like a ‘tank’ warrior not learning taunt. Prayer of healing is what sets priest apart from other healers. Additionally, not keeping smite and holy fire upgraded would significantly lower your DPS pre 40. Also not training resurrection… is just horribly selfish lmao.
Years ago 16 to be exact . I was like omfg 1 gold omg omg . Man when you think of it gold is cake to make . Professions and dungeons easyyyy
Helps to read the OP:
Or hell, read the guide I linked:
“Other spells (like Smite) are useful very early on, but quickly become useless as other spells become available.”
“It is always worth ranking up any spells learned through talents or racials. Also, if there is some extra gold left in the ol’ coinpurse, consider buying Resurrection, Renew, Prayer of Healing, Fade, and Flash Heal. These spells are useful while healing dungeons, and worth the money if one chooses to do so. However, don’t break the bank for these spells. It is quite possible to get by without them, and a mount is worth more than a wider variety of healing spells.”
Until level 40 I went
5/5 Wand Spec -
5/5 Life Tap -
2/2 Impro SW: Pain -
Disc until Divine Spirit
You won’t solo grind super fast, but you’ll have a bigger shield, more stamina, more spirit, better survivability. Your main solo rotation is:
Shield
Holy Fire (Insert the newest of Mind Blast or Smite if you want to feel like you playing)
SW: Pain
Wand
Alt - Tab and watch videos on youtube.
You will hardly need to drink between fights if you pull properlly, you only die if your mana emptied (so focus on +Int/+Spi items), you can heal or dps dungeons.
Respeced to Shadow on 40, it kills awesome faster but your mana will burn accordly (have some mage around for water)…
Real priests have a second monitor for this
Yeah, I did similar ( I went holy, not disc, for increased holy fire/smite damage, and better healing helped with SM spam), but this means you’ll invest significant money in spells you’ll never use from 40-59, since you can’t cast smite and holy fire in shadowform.
Shadow isn’t better at 40 for leveling. The downtime is awful. You can do a disc/holy/shadow and do as much damage as shadow (easily) with little to no downtime. Key talents are wand spec, spirit tap, imp shadow word pain. Eventually you want to work down the disc tree to the spirit buff. Go for gear with Stam/spirit. Int has a very low impact early on.
As mentioned you only really need Shadow word pain, holy fire or smite (don’t need both), power word shield, renew, heal/greater heal (use down ranked heal when you get greater heal) POH is great and all but you can honestly heal to 60 without it, especially if you are stacking spirit gear.
Talents, water, and buying spirit gear is what makes leveling a priest so expensive. That’s why the tri-build excels saving you huge amounts of gold along the way. Buying only certain spells helps as well. As far as gear my best advice is to research which dungeons srop spirit gear and focus on them. You can absolutely get by without buying spirit gear, some slots you’ll have 10+ levels lower at times.
I like the fact in classic all healing specs can solo pretty well (except for Druid). Its not lie that in retail.
There is no downtime as a Priest. This is especially the case when you hit 40 and get Shadow Form.
You are absolutely delusional. If you use MB, SWP, and mindflay to kill a mob you will be drinking after EVERY pull in a dungeon and every other pull in the world. If you don’t use those three spells the tri build does as much or likely more damage and can go without drinking hardly ever in the world, and every 3-4 pulls in a dungeon as DPS. If you’re healing in a dungeon you shouldn’t be doing and casted damage just wand when you aren’t healing.
Im leveling disc priest right now, I buy every skill and didn’t get my mount until level 43 or 44… after level 40 the gold ramps up and you get alot more of it… at level 40 I think I had like 30g…
I didn’t do any professions so I skipped certain spells and I was able to get it at 40 or 41. It’s not as bad as people think, it’s slow for sure, but as long as you’re not dropping insane amount of gold in drinks its not horrible.
