It’s never been more apparent to me than now that people have completely lost their pride in gaming. Maybe the ones who had pride in it have left and the only ones who are left don’t care anymore but I can see it everywhere; especially in WoW. What I mean by pride is a feeling of accomplishment, a feeling you did something that mattered and earned your spot or piece of gear. Once upon a time how someone’s character looked was great prestige but now transmog has pretty much destroyed that entirely.
There’s also no better example of how people have lost their pride than boosters and boosting in general. People literally pay real money (or gold) to have someone else do the work for them. But it’s more than that, because even though others are doing the work for them, the gear they’re getting won’t even be relevant in a few months and they’ll have to do it all over again. For what? So you can feel cool and powerful for awhile?
Personally I always do my best when I’m playing and try hard to make as few mistakes as possible. But then you see these people in M+ keys who just want to be fully carried as high as people will take their keys. I just don’t understand why, when I took a more casual approach to WoW for a few years I stopped grinding hardcore and focused on questing and alts. I don’t know, it’s just something that’s been bugging me recently just how many people don’t seem to have pride in their characters and just play to bring others down.
If my dad had it his way, I’d have spent my teenage years watching TV and drinking / smoking pot instead of being sober and playing wow with my ehomies.
Well, honestly, I don’t think playing a video game truly matters in any real sense. But I always play the best I can, and I never try to bring others down. I don’t think you can judge everyone by the behavior of others you’ve seen.
Yea i mean im all for that, but what have you really accomplished ? Virtual stuff ? Its basically useless, that’s why i laughs at players with KSM and CE that put others down that dont have it, i mean its useless stuff that you invested your time into … Games are good for entertainment to kill time when you got jack to do, its not a job that you are getting paid to do
Knew a guy in high school that bought toons in EQ. RMT have been part of the genre since inception.
Also, looking like a bag of skittles that got dumped out on a table was not accomplishment. It was ridiculous.
We used to be able to kid ourselves that we were good at the game and a certain piece of gear was a badge of that. Now that skill is IO, rating, or Ilvl based. The highest skill is invited to a global stage and pay outs.
The players who do have pride in their in-game accomplishments are often the same ones taking gold to run someone through a key or raid. Or, they realize they can get paid IRL for their gaming via Twitch/YouTube, and become streamers.
One could argue both of those approaches are also bad for the game.
That has pretty much been the case in every MMO ever made. In order for the game to progress, your old gear has to become obsolete and be replaced by something stronger. The only difference is how many months until you have to wait between gearing cycles
Even ESO, which has an amazing horizontal gear system, releases newer and stronger sets on occasion. Or they retune sets which changes which is strongest so you have to farm new pieces
I dunno, I’m fairly proud (as proud as one can be for an achievement of a bunch of pixels) about getting S2 and S3 KSM with two jobs, baby, and other stuff to do and not sacrificing any of that for it and not being carried.
I even made a point not to group with friends whom I know will basically carry me and tried my best to join groups where we’d all be relatively similar. Makes the achievement feel more legit.
Sure, I know people can just buy KSM, but whatever, they do them. I do me.
Maybe its because I’m old and grew up in a time where calling yourself a gamer got you called a nerd and beat up but Ive never really had any pride in my ability yo sit down and press multiple buttons at one time.
off topic a bit, but wow pvpers would be alot more proud if the prizepool was 200 grand split between the team, instead of 15. it is shocking how low that pool is. Other games, like fortnite, the winners make literally a million dollars
