Preventing DDOS

/facepalm .

Maybe they were banned for
Botting
Hacking
Gold selling
Harassment
Real life threats

But nope, it must be exactly what you’re upset about.

Yea, hmmm Linux gets hacked a lot…90% of servers are Linux, Linux gets hacked alot… Linux is the most used operating system in the world just not for personal computers.

I mean sure, preventing a DDoS is doable, but it’s not as easy as you seem to think. It’s actually less painful to wait it out.

Such as? Cant count addon websites because not 100% of players use addons. Ive yet to hear of one that is guaranteed.

DDoS is solved by more computing power not more security. Even firms who’s entire job is DDoS protection still sometimes get affected by a big enough DDoS attack (i.e., DDoS is still possible against infinite compute if you can generate infinite traffic).

Odd thing to fixate on. I don’t even play classicwow which has the dumpster fire of CS going on. But yeah, those are the big items right now that has the most people upset. Let’s not use logic though, what else you got for me?

There is a stark difference from mitigating and avoiding. maybe you should learn it. As you stated above, preventing DDoS Really isn’t feasible. Having a team to mitigate it so it isn’t such a hassle to the people who use the product, is another story. More than likely over the years due to the response times, its more than likely a bare bones crew, to handle the attacks.

players are paying for bots with their own credit/debit cards and giving the software admin privileges to install whatever it wants so they can flex on all of us noobs with their parses.

basically the malware guys are being given bank accounts to drain and slave nodes to conduct DDOS attacks with that pay for themselves

Yes, it is odd that you’re so fixated on what you’re upset about that you bring it up here.

Well when I last did cyber security course, although things have improved, it’s actually still quite possible for hackers to get through if they time it right.

It’s a War Within

I mean…it sounds like you need to apply to be part of their server security team, OP. I’m sure they’d love to have you implement your solutions!

In the meantime, this all has big “why are you hitting yourself?” energy. The game has a lot of DDOS attacks because people are deciding to attack the game servers in large numbers. Some are undoubtedly edgelords who just want to get noticed. Some might be taking up what they think is some kind of righteous banner. But “OTHER games don’t get DDOSed so often” is 100% out of Blizzard’s control, what targets people choose for malicious actions isn’t something that they can decide on behalf of the attackers.

Considering how often the game servers likely get attacked, it’s probably actually a small miracle that their uptime is as good as it is.

It might help in some small way to make sure the malware that causes DDOS attacks is not on OUR computers. Perhaps the attacker paid for the attack or maybe he/she made a bunch of wow websites that WE would be interested in to spread the malware.

Or maybe Blizz already has some kinda program built in to our downloaded data that would tell them if one of our PC was part of the botnet doing the attack.

If not, maybe Blizz should post something that says “We are under a DDOS attack, here is how to secure your PC to make sure your computer is not part of the problem” and then explain about why a firewall and anti-malware is important.

“War, War never changes.”
