Prestige classes

I think there’s a way to solve the talent and ability problem that blizzard has been trying to “fix” through questionable systems for the last few expansions. The answer, at least to me, seems to be to add another layer of specialization on top of the existing classes.

I would suggest that each class gets two to three new prestige classes, kind of like how D&D 3.5 handled it. I imagine these providing a layer of complexity to the classes that has been lacking (removed) since WoD launched. Like a necromancer prestige class that all warlock specs could pick up, but it might synergize best with an affliction warlock, with new DOTS and undead-themed summoning.

While interesting in theory, you’re basically suggesting that the dev team, that has troubles balancing and getting right the current array of classes, introduce 2 or 3 new specs for every class.

0% chance of happening.

I would be happy with one tbh.

I think the most we would see is cosmetic changes to abilities over an actual new spec. I’m all down for new things though(if they work)

Cosmetic changes would be cool, but I guess what I’m really asking for is more complex gameplay for the existing classes.

I think it’s worth noting that prestige classes as a concept only exists in games that are dramatically unbalanced altogether or are balanced significantly around all aspects of play, not merely combat.

If WoW was a tabletop right now, it’d be 4e D&D.

I think that about wraps up why prestige classes will never really happen and covenants are as close as it will get.

I don’t think we’re really going to get that tbh. Wow has always been an MMO that advertises itself as “everyones” MMO. “You can play on a toaster!” etc.

Shadowlands seems to be adding lots of stuff with a higher skill cap though. I doubt highly that any classes will ever really get to a “complex” point, but if there are things you can do that clearly make you feel more powerful or obvious that you are more skilled (and are by design a bit harder to execute) then i think it’ll be a good success.

Yeah this would be nice. But some of the complex rotations in the past that I think about normally had high skill caps which result in the top 1% being too good and the spec as a whole getting nerfed. I would love to see some fun brought back tho!

I don’t really want to see the skill cap go any higher, most casual players have enough trouble getting into a M+. Maybe they could add interesting utility abilites instead of new damage dealing abilities similar to the covenants? I believe it’s about time blizzard abandoned temporary power entirely and I thought this might be a way to do that.

I’ve been thinking borrowed power would be a good direction to point professions in, as it could cover things like tinkering.

Let’s wait and see what happens with Covenants before we jump in all the way with class-specific Covenants.
