Power leveling low level pets

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question or it has been answered elsewhere .. I've been looking around but can't seem to find an answer. Maybe it's obvious and I'm just not getting it. I'm very new to pet battles and pet collecting.

I've read about a common strategy to power level low level pets with a team of two high level pets. The low level pet is in for one round, does it's thing, you switch it out and finish the battle with the high level pets.

My question is .. during that first round that the low level pet is in, how do you keep it from dying since you need it to be alive at the end in order to get XP? It seems to always die to the very first attack before I am able to switch it out. Is there a minimum level for this strategy ? I've been using level 1 - 5 pets.

If level 1 -5 is too low, what's a good way to level a pet up from scratch, aside from the stones you can buy with pet charms?

Thanks for reading and helping a noob pet battler out! :)
You don't have to start with your leveling pet. Switch it in for 1 round later and then switch it out immediately. It doesnt need to perform any attack to get exp. There are many options to bring in your lvl 1 pet for 1 round without it taking damage:

- Blind the enemy with blinding poison or blinding powder. Then swap to your low level, then swap to a high level pet again.
- Use a stun.
- Use decoy.
- Wait until one of your high level pets died, then bring in the lowbie and switch him out right away.
- Instead of actually letting your high level pet die, use haunt. (My go-to team that works for 90% of all pet tamers used to be: Unborn Valkyr (shadowshock, curse of doom, haunt) + Blighted squirrel (woodchipper, crouch, stampede), + a low level pet.)

Thank you !! Very helpful :)
Welcome! We're glad to have someone new to talk to!

It's not a dumb question, but most of the answers you might find are based on already having higher level or a level 25 pet.

For 1-5 pets, wild pets in Elwyn Forest and Dun Morogh will be your best bet. Oh, and Gnomeregon, outside and down in - but not in the instance.

If you need to stay in Trade Chat for whatever reason, Stormwind Old Town has a Stablemaster for healing your pets, and within sight of her are a couple of rats and a rabbit and squirrel. These are usually level 1 or 2, so fewer problems with your pet dying.

I'm sure others will be coming along with tons of other suggestions, so stay tuned!

Never be afraid to ask us questions. We are usually a pleasant group to talk to (NOT like General Discussion), even our trolls are more nuisance than trouble. If pve and collecting are your thing, many people have tons of knowledge. Pvp is of interest on this forum too, with Brawler and Discodoggy being among the most knowledgeable, though their comments about pve are also great.

Welcome again, and come back often!

Thanks for the suggestions! Luckily I do have quite a few lvl 25 pets now, thanks to collecting pet charms and using stones, so I am able to do most of the world quests and all that. I'm up to 14 lvl 25 pets so far, so I'm getting there... slowly.
There is actually a specific event thing where you can super power level pets i'll see if i can find a guide to the strategy...

^ that my fave way of doing it. You just need to have the 2 carrier pets and you can level any level 1 pet to 25 in 2 battles. You can level hundreds of pets to max if u want.

Here are the dates:
https://www.warcraftpets.com/community/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16187

What you want is for squirt to appear in your garrison at the same time as the pet bonus exp event. next one is June 13 for US and Oceania.

It's like battle pet christmas ^_^

You can also power level pets on the Pandarian Spirit tamers every day but they can be a little trickier, and need different special carry team setups.
If your levelling pet starts the pet battle, he must attack.

However, if you bring in your levelling pet some time AFTER, he does not have to attack. Just swap him and swap him out.

Another pet that might be useful in levelling is Anubisath Idol If you have one of max level, his Sandstorm ability reduces all attacks by seventy points.

So, if you're fighting low-level pets, leveling up your other pets, just have Anubisath Idol start, create Sandstorm, then bring in your leveling pets, then bring back Anubisath Idol to bat cleanup. At low levels, nothing is going to hit your pet for seventy points, so as long as the Sandstorm's up, your carry pets are safe.

I see that you have a modest collection of level 25 pets. But you have made excellent choices as to which pets to level. I see Anubisath Idol, Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling, Unborn Val'kyr, Zandalari Anklerender, Chrominius and others.

Apparently, you've gotten guidance from somewhere as to what pets you should be leveling.

I'm going to give a few resources.

This is my favorite website when it comes to levelling pets.

This is Xu-Fu's Pet Battle Strategies. https://www.wow-petguide.com/?m=Home

If you look across the top, you'll see that the pet battles are categorized. Pay particular attention to Draenor and Pandaria. These two areas have various Pet Battle Tamers, and this website will give you strategies how to defeat each one and with a carry pet.

On Draenor, every Pet Battle Master will allow you to bring a carry pet, even as low as level one. On Pandaria, some will allow you a level one carry pet; others will be higher.

I know you don't have all the pets that you'd need to take on every single Pet Tamer yet, but when it starts listing pets you don't have, consider that guidance as to what you need to get next. And there are some you can take on, such as Cymre Brightblade in Draenor and Courageous Yon in Pandaria.

And this sticky is a good guide as which pets we consider the most valuable. https://us.battle.net/forums/en/wow/topic/18300093791

My favorite strategy for getting low-level pets started, fly to Halfhill in Pandaria and head north to the farmlands. Then use your low-level and two 25's team. The Marsh Fiddlers there (and there are LOTS of them) have only one of the six possible attacks they randomly use that'll kill a level 1 pet. Yeah, my starter lowbie may die 17 % of the battles but that's not so bad. Once your starter is up to 4 or 5, never seen one die on first round.

Other advantage of this place is if you're leveling a toon same time you're leveling a pet. Any level alt can work it safely long as they stay away from area in middle with the Virmen running around (I've started with level 6 toons, who level fast). This of course assumes you can work with mage and someone with 2-seater flyer to help getting low-level to Halfhill FP. Then just head northwest to farmlands and you won't encounter any bad guys.

Loncis, I know you know what you mean, so this isn't meant to counter the above quoted text. Since the new poster is very new and may not understand mechanics, I wanted to clarify something. In the above described scenario, the pet being levelled does not actually have to attack. It can also use defensive moves and even use "pass" instead. It just needs to survive the first round in some capacity before being switched out in round 2.

I only mention this because there are some PvE strats where the carry pet shouldn't attack (I have one or two strats where if the carry pet were to crit, it would cause the first enemy to die too early messing up cooldowns for example. Also, if it is a level 1 pet and the first ability has a stun proc or other CC, that could mess up the strat should the CC land).

Thank you very much. I should have said that the carry pet needs to carry out some kind of action, even if it's just Pass or a defensive move. It doesn't have to be an attack.

And to repeat, this is ONLY when the carry pet, for whatever reason, starts the pet battle.

If the carry pet is not the first pet used in the pet battle, he doesn't need to do anything. Just swap it in and swap it right back out again the very next turn.

And while I'm posting on this topic, there is one other way to level a carry pet in a pet battle, and there are some pet bosses where this tactic is useful.

It is for the first two pets to die, finishing off all three of the enemy pets, leaving your carry pet the only survivor. And the carry pet doesn't need to be switched in at all for this to work.

For instance, there is a pet tamer in Legion, on the south end of Broken Shore. The usual tactic is to use Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling until it dies. MPD should finish off the first two pets, then die to the third. Then bring in Darkmoon Zeppelin to use Decoy, then attack the last enemy pet with Flyby. When the last enemy is below 600 health, use Explosion, which will finish off the last pet, and destroy the Zeppelin, leaving your carry pet to collect the experience.
Safari Hat is a useful toy to buff leveling.
You get it by completing the "Taming the World" achievement.

i dont get on much forums and post, but tried yous just to see what it was like. if you use [Feline Familiar], with Pounce/Stoneskin/Devour, you never have to stop to heal any pets, bc your Felines Devour just kills the other pet and heals while your lvling pet heals off levels. Very consistent! Not the fastest but def works well. Thumb up.
Another leveling spot..... WoD Garrison with the Hallow's Eve Decorations Pets active.

I use a Ghastly Rat in slot 1 Flurry, Swarm of Flies, Crouch
Leveler in slot 2.
Grommloc in slot 3 Smash, Charge,Blood.

I've leveled level 1's upward. First opponent pet is always an undead. Swap low levels (less than level 8) in and out during resurrection cycles. Versus the undead rat, rarely have I had a low level die. The undead maggot and spider can both be iffy dependent on what the starting abilities are. But there's so many of the Hallow's pets roaming around the garrison and their respawn is almost instantenous, its easy to roam around and stick to the rats for leveling battling.
why is it that during the bonus xp week i can get 14000 xp and about 17 lvls on a pet in one battle in pandaria, and in bfa i just got 840 xp killing bloodtusk?
I use 2 Feline Familiars with Onyx Bite, the shield and Devour, with leveling pet up front. The second Feline is just in case I need a back up, which I rarely do.

I take the level 1 pets to the beaches and gorilla zones around Booty Bay and get them to level 10.

Then, if I don't need to capture any current pets, I go to Townlong Steppes and grind them up to 25. Once you get a rhythm you can grind endlessly using Devour, without having to heal and the Familiars do really well against the pets in that area.

Oh...and don't fight a spider first when using the level 1 in STV going first, the webbing will trap it there.

Ahanistazi, as far as I know you only get the boosted XP when you fight a Tamer. Bloodtusk is its own battle pet, and thus, not a Tamer.

It has more to do with the number of pets you're going against, I believe. Single-pet fights have never rewarded more xp than any of the three pet fights, bonus week or not. It's one of the reasons that when I make a leveling strat with a single-pet enemy, I let people know that the xp is most times not worth adding a leveling pet. Where a normal fight will get you from, say, level 1-6/8 not on bonus week, on a single pet you'll only get to 4. As your pets get higher in level, the xp they get is rather inconsequential from single-pet fights

The exp on single-opponent battles is super nerfed. The same happens with Jammer and Bristlespine and any other fight where the target doesn't bring any allies.

I assume the logic is "anybody can kill this fight with Iron Starlette and 2 carry pets, let's not make things too easy for them".
