Keep in mind, I have no idea, but I was talking with a friend and came up with a plausible theory.
What if, and a very big What if…Arthas…is not who we fight in the Anduin encounter…
I believe we are being misled on the PTR, I think it will actually be Varian.
The Jailer would have dominated Varian and placed his soul into HIS weapon that he would use to dominate HIS son, it would be such an evil thing to do.
As it has been explained before fel magic obliterates the sould. It use his soul as fuel and completely destroyed it, there was nothing left. He never went to the SL.
Varian being the Fallen King just makes a lot of sense to me, namely, because of the Pocket Watch being dropped after we stop Sylvanas.
It also explains why Anduin keeps breaking free of his control while being in a confused state, because Varian is fighting the domination magic and giving his son a chance.
Sylvanas actually feels bad for using Kingsmourn on Anduin because she knows what it contains and actually had respect for Varian.
Actually no, it is a thing, but simply killing someone with fel magic isn’t enough to obliterate a soul, otherwise there would be no souls to power the Legion’s ‘soul engines’ which require souls to be burned as fuel. A soul has to be utterly consumed by fel in order for it to be obliterated, and that didn’t happen to Varian. His body was destroyed, not his soul.
Fel is fueled by drawing life from living beings and consuming their souls. It requires but an insignificant sacrifice—a living fish or two, a few strands of seaweed—to fuel the magic.
When a soul is devoured by fel energies, it produces more fel and is utterly destroyed in the process. Lesser warlocks must use a soul shard(or soul fragment) to summon minor demons. Soul shards can be used to power spells, or to create a connection to the Twisting Nether, pulling a demon through against its will.
Would be cool if you were right, but I have the highest doubt.
The ability descriptions, voice lines, appearance of Arthas himself in the fight all suggest that it’s… just riding the Arthas coattails as much as they can for nostalgia bucks.
That passage comes from lore surrounding the ‘Soul Engines’ which are buildings that store and use souls to power the Legion’s war machines. Living victims are gathered, slain by Jailer demons, and their souls are captured to be used as fuel.
That did not happen to Varian, he was killed and his body was obliterated, but Gul’dan didn’t even attempt to capture his soul to be used later as fuel, so his soul may have gone to the Shadowlands, or, it may be watching over Anduin in the same way Cairne’s soul is watching over Baine.
This is a good plot point, however, I do have a working theory for this as well, it it actually goes back to Varian’s WoW orgin.
When Varian had his soul split (I know, but here me out) by Onixia, when they botched the spell, half of his soul was found in Kalimdor, the other was shown “saved” by Lady Prestor and parading around Stormwind, acting extremely arrogant and cocky, and was manipulated by Onixia into doing some horrible things to the citizens or Stormwind, even tried to have him kill his other half thinking it was an evil twin.
So what if, when Varian rejoined his two halfs, they were forever bonded, both good and bad, and he had to live with his actions (much like Sylvanas currently) when he was blown up by the fel magic it actually Resplit his soul, one half went to Maldraxxis or Bastion, and the other went to Revendreth to atone for his actions.
Would explain the NPC with the Hood that is blocking his face that was datamined on the PTR, and would also explain how Varian ended up in the Maw, as Denathrius would have thrown him in.
