Potato world - Old world Textures need an update

I think it goes without saying that old world content needs an update. But honestly its the visuals of the old world that needs it more then the quests.

I was flying through Blades Edge Mountains for the Midsummer bonfires and every part of the textures reminded me of the graphics of the time, and just how badly they contrasted to my HD textured self and beautiful flying mount.

Now knowing we are getting dragon-ridding races in the old world next patch and that they are gonna be races for every continent, it would be nice not to zoom through a low-poly blooming onion, when dragon riding brings new life to these places. Maybe my setting are too low or I have a poor graphics card checks :dracthyr_a1: “Nope its just that old.” But it would be nice to have someone go through all these places and give em a little love in there base textures.

it may be unlikely for the devs to devote some of there beautiful artist to, but long term it would be nice to see them all updated. At least everything pre Mop. Anyways that’s all. :dracthyr_comfy_sip:

They’ve been slowly working on updating general textures and assets a patch at a time. I think it’ll eventually get there. It’s likely smarter to do it that way so it’s not such a huge job to complete all at once, and they can work on other things while doing little updates when it’s relevant to what they are currently working on.

They’ll get to it faster if it offends hard enough.

I don’t think they changed those because anyone was offended, since no one complained about them. I think it was a knee-jerk reaction to the lawsuits against them and wanting to get rid of anything from a certain person they fired.

Too bad they won’t allow the community to clean up the graphics. I’ve seen some amazing things done with older games. Take the Elder Scrolls games for example.

Everything they are doing is nice, but they need a full FF14-style revamp in order to really get old players to come back. I think most folks are just bored with WoW, to be honest.

Chromie-Time is a good start, and the dragon-riding is praised because it’s shaken up otherwise-mundane transportation.

But it needs to work with all mounts, the non-dragon ones included.

It’d be neat if mechanical mounts had their own unique perks, like being able to hover unlike dragons, and maybe undead mounts could be immune to being dismounted on, cool stuff like that.

A visual revamp of the old world would also go a long way, especially since WoW has about 20 years of collective content, which tons of people are still doing to this day, and Chromie Time helps keep it alive to some degree.

Again, a full revamp, maybe bringing things back to a modern era after they’ve been stuck in Cataclysm since forever, would probably be necessary. Pretty much every continent before MoP, and the rest maybe just a lore/NPCs update.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (mods)
Resident Evil 4 (HD Pack)
Terraria (texture packs)

The community really do cool things with assets.
Lets also not forget the first iteration of Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

Think of it this way… even the trees are 2D… noticeably so. Part of this is that WoW uses painted on textures rather than digital rendering. Most of the assets in game including character models are just 2D texture blobs with the illusion of depth.

I was flying over ZG a few days ago and … yeah, it could use a refresh. Is that really what they need to spend resources on though? The fact is that RSV needs to come back, all hunter talent trees need a refresh (too many 2/3 pt nodes that just give %dmg increase) and they need to open all classes up to all races first. Plus! Think about all of the real world holidays that aren’t represented in game yet.

Pretty sure there is a ton of datamined new updated visuals for a lot of old world assets, I expect a huge old world update/revamp is coming in the next expansion as it’s also major milestone anniversary for the game.

Unless there’s going to be an expansion set in the original zones, I seriously doubt they’re going to spend the massive amount of time/effort that would be required to do something like this. Filling in all the gaps to enable flying back in Cata probably took them long enough, and they didn’t have to remodel/retexture everything else along the way.
