Ran a dungeon earlier on my healer with a VDH and he took some different talents. He took Razor Spikes, Feed the Demon, and Gluttony. This guy didn’t hurt much (only a +10) and still did respectable damage.
Was curious so I simmed my character comparing the normal build (1213x2x) and this other build (3212x1x). Using dungeon slice, there was only about a 2% dps drop compared to spirit bomb. Using patchwork 1 boss 5 min fight, there was about a 18% decrease in dps. Using patchwork 5 boss 3 min fight for raw aoe, there was a 30% decrease in dps.
I’m not too familiar with how the dungeon slice sim works and why there is such a large difference in damage done.
If the damage for gluttony/feed was closer to spirit bomb, could this be a better alternative? I know gluttony has it’s rng issues, but if you are always tanking something in m+, wouldn’t the random meta procs be at least more useful than in raid where it can proc while you don’t have the boss?
Edit:
Nevermind. Tried the build out in a dungeon and while I had much more defense, compared to roughly how much damage I normally do in dungeons, it felt like I was doing about 60% of my normal damage without spirit bomb and fracture.
Something you don’t see in a sim is just how easy it is to hit everything with Spirit Bomb and how annoying it is to use Cleave.
My friend hates the Spirit Bomb build so he runs Gluttony w/ Vision of Perfection as his minor and there is a noticeable difference comparing the damage done between the two of us (I run Spirit Bomb). The Gluttony build is definitely a lot more effective in a raid environment compared to M+ since you don’t need the extra cleave damage and generally prefer extra survivability.
On the other hand, he can take much larger pulls than what I would take because he has extra defense. Tbh I think both are viable builds it just depends on your group comp in m+. The Spirit Bomb build is more general purpose and can work with any group comp whereas the Gluttony build is more towards heavy aoe/cleave groups on weeks that don’t just screw you over by chain pulling. I’m looking at you bolstering.
The real problem is that VDH are balanced around spirit bomb, any build without it is considered sub-optimal. We should be balanced around Soul Cleave, but the spec would need a total rework at this point

Which I’m hoping we get by at least 9.0 tbh. Love this class and spec but hate how far behind other tanks we are unless we borderline outgear the content.
Why would you minor Visions in a Gluttony build?
The uptime difference and the heal without the major are pretty insignificant.
edit: BTW, if you run Gluttony in S3 skittish fort dungeons, you will absolutely murder all your dps over and over.
I don’t play the build I’ve only dpsed/healed for him. But he says because of Gluttony procing at least once per fight it’s the 5% heal that he gets anytime Gluttony procs on the minor.
Though now that I think about it. Vision major + Spirit Bomb might not work out too badly. Best of both worlds?
Doesn’t really proc enough and it’s so random. When I was testing Vision+Lucid on the ptr, the only way to make it alright was with Gluttony. The problem is Soul Cleave. I ran with a VNG today using that build and they had serious problems with trash pack agro.
I mean, it’s personal taste but that build sounds miserable.
