Portals in fantasy and science fiction have been a major staple in both genres for years. In literature, cinema, and gaming. In World of Warcraft they are used to travel between geographic locations as well as to other worlds and realms of existence. And yes this is considering that we are talking here of what can be considered pure fantasy.
But just for fun, the question here is what is your theory as to how Portals actual function. What physics effect Portals. Even considering (In fantasy) magic. Which of the different schools of magic would be at work here?
I think of mages as fun little dimension yankers, who rip into a fourth spatial dimension to send us three dimensional stinkers through. It is like, how an ant walks across a flat piece of paper, you can bend that paper into the third dimension, folding it over and letting the ant walk onto your fold, and the ant can “teleport” relative to it’s 2d world.
Mages are smart, I think they’d be able to set up little wormholes through a fourth spatial (non-temporal) dimension.
Just don’t ask where Elmyouu’s rejuvenation comes from

I’ve always subscribed to the logic that portals essentially vaporize you but then recreate you at the destination. Technically you died.
That’s why I always slap a Soul Stone just incase. I do not trust that faded out Goblin Warranty sticker on the back of those machines.

I just look at it as a fold in space/time to connect to certain points together.
Achievable by science or magic in this universe.

Canonically mage portals were meant to operate on ley lines while warlock gateways rip through the twisting nether, but I feel like this distinction was lost during warlords when Khadgar just makes a portal connecting alternate timelines and planets together so who knows at this point.

Nightborne still use key lines. I think Oculleth is the most powerful mage in the lore when it comes to portals specifically.

They have to do with ley lines and sometimes requiring massive amounts of power (well of eternity to let through the burning legion, etc)

Mages convince two locations that they’re actually adjacent to each other when they are not.

Mage portals use the same physics as Wile E Coyote painting.

Mages and the mob seem to have some stuff in common.
Probably something like wormholes
The internet is a series of tubes.

You time a dungeon at +10
mages are vending machines and taxis and thats all they ever will be
You should probably ask Geralt of Riva that question, I’m sure he knows how better than anyone here.
I could tell you, but you couldn’t possibly understand without a masters degree from Dalaran School of Magecraft and Magery.
