What is in the portal that is in a place surrounded by a circle of trees in the middle of duskwood? And I remember clearly there was a boss which happened to be a dragon (can’t remember the name now), did it drop anything after it dies? I can still remember my old guild trying to down it back in wotlk but failed due to not being enough people for it

World dragon - drops some good loot for pre-AQ40.

Yep I think those portals were originally planned to be portals to the Emerald Dream but Blizzard scrapped those plans and they lead nowhere and each one has a world boss dragon that spawns in front of it.

Hmm…was thinking it never dropped anything but that is so cool.

Blizzard didn’t scrap those plans. In Legion those portals all go to the Emerald Dreamway, which was part of the Druid guild hall. Pretty sure you have to be a druid to use them though.
What’s more interesting was the gated mystery portal in Stormwind. They removed it when they update the capital cities, but there was a lot of speculation about what it was for. There was some speculation that it was intended to be part of the stockades, but never materialized.

I heard that portal was going to be for player housing or something of a sort. I betchu so much more could’ve been added to vanilla but alas they apparently didn’t have the time for it because of TBC…I think they should’ve just added more content instead of entire xpacs because it ruins the core experience of what wow was truly like and changing what could’ve been added that would’ve made vanilla even better than we all knew IMHO

You do have to be a Druid.
The ones that will appear in Classic (though will not be usable) are:
Twilight Grove, Duskwood
Seradane, Hinterlands
Dream Bough, Feralas
There are (in current WoW) four others:
Ursoc’s Den, Grizzly Hills
Stormrage Barrow Dens, Moonglade (this location will exist in Classic, but there won’t be a visible portal)
Nordrassil, Mount Hyjal
Dreamgrove, Val’sharah
As others have said, there were original plans way back in early WoW that those portals would allow transport to the Emerald Dream (map files from the old source code had those crazy looking zones).
Instead they opted for world boss Dragons that were caught in many hilarious fiasco’s such as kiting them to Major Cities to wipe out people, or mob tagging to prevent Alliance/Horde from being able to mess with the mob for an extended period of time.

one of the many unused portals areas never used for anything.
back in Vanlla thoose kinds of things where really fun to speculate about with guildies when you’d come across them exploring
They’re used for Druids to get to the Emerald Dream hub, though that functionality was only added in Legion. A Druid can run into any of them (except the Ashenvale one) and end up in a special zone called the Dreamway, where they can run through other portals to end up in new places.
Also the dragon in Duskwood is Emeriss.
The 4 green world dragons are spawning now during the 14th anniversary event (though I think only 1 dragon per day).
They drop loot that scales up to item level 350 and can warforge beyond that.
FYI Emeriss hits insanely hard. If you couldn’t zerg it due to the very close GY, it would feel like a mythic difficulty raid fight.

You can graveyard zerg them now? In Vanilla if you died while fighting one, you got a 15 minute debuff that caused you to be slept for 2 minutes when you got in range of the dragons pulsing aura.

Oh yeah, now that you mention it, I remember that debuff from Vanilla.
But yes… now you can gy zerg them. There is no longer any aura. In fighting Emeriss a couple days ago, I died 7x zerging him while on my druid.
Nobody was killing the mushrooms so the entire combat field was carpeted with a couple hundred of them. The raidwide damage from them was insane.

Joined a group doing Lethon.
Had nature aura doing damage and lots of sleepy circles everywhere.
Finally killed him with only 8 players up at the time.
I was worried he would reset.
Got a 360 necklace with lots of haste and a socket.
What tier did Onyxia drop in vanilla?
Tier 2 helms, and roughly Ragnaros ilvl weapons (which in turn where basically normal AQ40 ilvl)
Other unused portals I can think of included:
-Azshara Crater Battleground portals in Azshara
-Uldum in Southern Tanaris had a green raid portal that never got linked to anything
Then two I know where looked at for dungeon or raid content that never materialized, but am unsure if there’s actual portals anywhere (wasn’t a big explorer)
-Grim Batol
-Karazan.
She dropped the tier 2 helmets along with an assortment of other epic items
