There isn’t nearly enough people compared to like, the time when Siege of Orgrimmar had been out for a year and there was nothing new to do until WoD (people thought WoD was going to be good back then).

This has nothing to do with the overall population of the game. Games start like this if a premade was going to join and instead skipped the queue.
Maybe people just don’t want to pvp anymore. Can’t say I’d blame them, it’s terrible.

It feels to me like there are significantly fewer people playing right now than we had 3 months ago. Whether Season 2 will bring a lot of players back, I have no idea.

Somewhat related to this: I’ve been seeing the Alliance-to-Horde “merc mode” NPC up more and more recently
Now, for context/for those that don’t know, the active/queuing Horde BG playerpool has historically been much larger than than the Alliance BG playerpool
The fact that the (historically very rare) “Nassar” NPC is suddenly appearing every few hours tells me something very wonky has happened to the BG playerpool
Either the Horde side has shrunk by a ton, or both sides have shrunk with more Horde players taking a break/unsubbing/etc… because for literally years beforehand the merc mode NPC was “only” available to Horde, even during the severe content droughts of Shadowlands

With DF most PvPers went alliance.

Oh that only counts arenas, of which I don’t touch- hate arenas. Never did them seriously outside of Solo Shuffle, and perhaps when they were new back in TBC.
All I do is casual and rated bgs. I’ve only started RBGs this expansion.
My original main isn’t even counted on CheckPvP, as are several of my other characters because I haven’t touched them since before SL.
I might be casual now, I guess? Always playing WoW less each expac.

Trying to hunt mount rares out in the world, and I can say the game doesn’t feel dead.
Also, waiting for the arachnoid harvester, I see anywhere from 5-30 people waiting for it to spawn at all hours of the day.

I farmed catch-up gear on my alt and then steamrolled N VOTI in a pick-up group. The game is totally dead.

There’s really no point in doing anything when the next patch is about a week away.
