Is it normal for the powers-that-be to choose to bring down WOW for 8 HOURS during the middle of the day in the US? As someone who worked in support and in change management, it is certainly a poor customer experience for your largest customer base! Someone needs to tell Blizzard/Activision how to chunk their updates into smaller pieces so as not to annoy paying customers so much! Seems as though you should make updates without bringing down the whole system. As a returning player from 10 years ago, I would have thought Support/Dev would not be so clueless.
Simply put, yes.
Tuesdays have been maintenance day for 20 years now.
You were alerted to this downtime in the launcher.
If you played 10 years ago, nothing has changed.
Patch dates have had longer maintenance the whole time.
Tech support is primarily player discussion, not feedback, but you can edit the post to the general discussion forum.
As far as downtime it has been common for restarts weely, but sometimes longer downtime is needed to provide a better experience and more content to player base.
You should’ve been here when the first expansion came out. Burning Crusade was a mess at time. There were stretches where, after major patches, the game would be so unstable that you’d log in, run a short distance, and you’d either get kicked out, or the whole thing would crash. The game would be down for minutes, to hours, to even days.
It got better with Lich King, but it still crashed regularly. They finally worked out most of the bugs, but it took numerous expansions, and it’s finally stable, which is good.
This is a big patch with a new zone, and other new things. Due to what I described above they generally don’t open the game till they’re pretty sure its’ stable. There are still bugs and still issues, but it’s a lot better now. They run tests with GMs playing the game for a bit testing the new zones, items, quests, etc. then they open the game for the rest of us.
Actually, there has been one change - longer maintenance windows have decreased in frequency quite a bit. They used to be a lot more frequent.
