So I guess I screwed up the Plunderstorm event with the cannon? Do you only get one shot at the ammunition for this? Now I cant seem to trigger a refreshed set of ammo for the cannon, did I miss the opportunity to loot the chest?

no idea about time, theres pirates and a special loot chest on the new isle now…all I know is I was an idiot and didn’t realize the objective to the cannon now I cant get fresh ammo to use it to kill the turle to get the key???
Try abandoning the quest and picking it up again.
I have no quests…none associated with the isle, I turned in all quests the day I did them. unlocked the special assignment and got my ring upgrade.
Update:
what a dork, this key has nothing to do with the cannon…it’s a turtle guy that spawns. in-game people told me I needed to use the cannon, some even suggested inside the storm. guess I was played by the community.
The real kicker…there’s nothing signficant in the chest 
I think OP is getting confused with the Sirens Isle storm phase.

I asked in game how to get the key, the community told me from the turle, then they asked if I did the cannon…just went off what others told me. Had I just went stright to google from the beginning none of this would have happened. One of the rare times in-game failed me.
Whatever you’re talking about isn’t Plunderstorm, which is a separate game outside of WoW. You’re just gonna confuse everyone here with your title.
Plunderstorm hasn’t started yet…Jan 14th for it…next week…
Not only was their storm plundered, the date at which the event starts was plundered as well.

Well, I guess with the pirates I assumed this was a thing. No idea what this event you’re talking about is, it’s not on my battle.net desk top app. End of the day, I killed the turlte and opened the chest just to relaize it didn’t give a single item worth all this trouble I just went through. sorry for wasting everyones time
