Plot Thread Speculation (Spoilers)

Hello again, WrA! As some of you have no doubt noticed, there’s a lot going on in the background of BfA. Dozens of potential story threads are being touched upon in passing, often via Expedition rewards and other side content.

The black dragonflight is active again, their unmarred scales suggesting a new brood has been born somewhere, perhaps on the Dragon Isles themselves.

Sargeras’ sword unearthed long-forgotten tombs across Uldum, unleashing a “new” tribe of tol’vir who, upon hearing of Rajh’s death, constructed new keepers via a hitherto unknown Titanic Forge.

A massive fleet, thousands of ships large, of vrykul raiders sails the Great Sea.

Helya is reforming, or has already reformed.

And more! Like, a lot more.

So, WrA… what are your thoughts? Where do you think these threads will lead? Where would you like to see these threads lead? Discuss potential plot threads and possible future stories here! But let’s keep it (mostly) positive, please. We already have threads to discuss BfA’s shortfalls.

My favorite is the hint at the Mantid swarming over the Azerite and the new queen. The Mantid and klaxxi were some of my favorite parts of MoP and hopefully we will see more of them in the future…even better be an allied race option albeit however unlikely.

Of all those, I’d be keenest to see what the Black Dragonflight is up to. Wrathion has long been the most interesting villain we’ve had in ages and it’d be nice if we got to see a character who was capable of thinking in at least two steps ahead.

Helya and the Kvaldir are neat, but we just had an expac about them.

I’d be interested in seeing what the Mantid were up to, though.

Above all else I want the tol’vir to return. Either as a villain or friendly faction, don’t care - they were criminally underutilized in Cata, and not even their part in the Windwalker artifact in Legion gave them the screentime they sorely need.

The Tol’vir, I think, got a raw deal when they were unveiled. I can recall their lore being fairly interesting, but for the life of me, I can’t remember anything about the plot of Uldir that wasn’t a bad pop culture reference.

Woah woah wait what?! I never head of any of this! All that is really happening?

Yes, and (much) more! I’d post links, but apparently I’m not allowed to do that.

Check out the black dragonfight, Amathet, Bloodwake, and Helya articles on wowpedia if you’d like to read more on the stuff discussed in the OP.

I’d be hyped traveling back to Uldum and visiting new tombs, unearthing new secrets of Azeroth’s past. It’s such an enchanting, exotic place.

I’d also love to see what this fleet of a thousand ships looks like… and if no one has ever bumped into them yet, it stands to reason they are on the other side of Azeroth… right?

Dragons can no longer reproduce.

Wait, we meant except on the Dragon Isles.

Also, Uldum was probably the best thing to come out of Cataclysm.

You would make a thread like this while I am on a 12 hour shift at work, wouldn’t you? I will dig into this when I get home and don’t have to type with sausage fingers and the evil that is auto-correct.

That would actually be an AWESOME zone if we ever had a reason for it. Imagine an entire zone where it’s nothing but ships to run plank-from-plank on. Sort of like the coconut guys from Moana.

See, now I do feel kind of silly for having virtually ignored the xpac’s stories since I capped my worgen rogue soon after release and promptly lost interest.

The Island Expedition quest items have been my favourite storytelling elements of this expansion.

I’d love to see a lot happen based on the dragon item. Dragon Isles, some dragon-themed hero class (mail wearer pls), all that.

There’s one about Mogu necromancers, and there’s necromancers on the islands with that cool green hands spell thingy, I’d love to see more of that.

The Mantid one is awesome. New Queen!

All this is going on, but what we get to see is is Red Guys and Blue Guys fighting over shiny rocks.

I’m conflicted about the mantid. On one hand, their story had an engaging arc and a sensible conclusion. On the other hand, they’re cool as heck and I want to see them again.

I’m also really enjoying all the Dragon Isles speculation. I doubt we’ll see playable dragon dudes or even a dragon-themed class, but man. Man. Both of those things would be rad and I desperately want to believe. But honestly, I’ll just be happy if the dragonflights get to be cool again. They’ve been done dirty by prior expacs.

They gave everyone Ashbringers to apologize for WoD, I don’t think playable dragons are off the table for next expansion.

Some of my favourite quests from the Island Expeditions I would love to see explored further:

The Strangling Root: With evidence from Remulos that not all Druids and beings of the Emerald Dream see mortals as allies, having a sub-raid pop up where Druids and beings who do not see mortal civilisation as a good thing pop up and start tearing down Alliance, Horde and every other ‘civilized’ culture they can find using Druidic magic could be an interesting plot hook to explore.

It would be quite fascinating for Cenarius to be asked to intercede for the Alliance by Malfurion, only for the Arch-Druid’s beloved Shando to just shrug and say while he can’t aid Malfurion, he won’t aid the other druids either. It’d be rather a bitter pill to swallow for the Night Elves after Elune ‘failed’ them at Teldrassil and then to find the Wild Gods they thought were on their side don’t much care about the Night Elves, so long as their domains are respected and protected, they’ll work with anyone.

Kind of hoping to see the Night Elves grow further when the Alliance refuses to engage in a suicidal blood-bath to retake their lands and the Wild Gods say that so long as the Orcs, Trolls and Tauren will keep the Goblins in check and keep the shrines intact, they’re fine with the current setting, to have the Night Elves just flip right out and reinvent their society after being betrayed by all of their religious figures in the space of a single year and having Illidan being proven right all along, it would certainly push Malfurion and Tyrande to rise above it all and try to keep their people alive as something other than enraged death-seekers or emotionally-crushed refugees.

I’d love to see The Murloc Eye and The Elemental Core intertwine, with Azshara making a pact with a rising challenger for the position of Elemental Lord, a Steam (Water/Fire) or Volcanic (Water/Earth/Fire) Elemental who Azshara has managed to infuse Azerite into without driving the Elemental insane or berserk. While not quite at the level of an Elemental Lord or Prince yet, the Elemental is possessed of absurdly strong abilities due to the Azerite and continued exposure will only increase it’s strength. Azshara plans to use the Elemental to actively crack several weak-points in the planet’s crust, flooding the surface of the world with disaster as earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis ravage the surface while her minions, deep in the darkest depths of the ocean, remain relatively unscathed. With the Horde and Alliance too busy butting heads over their petty land-dweller squabbles, the only thing Azshara needs to do is make sure she can keep feeding Azerite to the Elemental while stockpiling enough for her own use after it’s work is done and she can try the infusion process on herself in peace while the land-dwellers are busy dying off or butchering each other for the last few habitable tracts of land left after her work is done.

There’s more but I have to adult now.

Alliance and Horde leaders begin salivating uncontrollably at the thought of more ships.

Personally I’d love to revisit a partially shattered Uldum, maybe the ground has slowly weakened over the last however-long-since-touchdown due to Sarg’s sword and layers of undiscovered ruins are now accessible. It’d be a great megadungeon (like nuKara) or series of dungeons (think ICC 5 mans), maybe culminating in dealing with said Titan Forge and new tol’vir.

The island quest items honestly frustrate me. Literally all of them sound like the basis for better expansions than what we have. Why would you give us a plate of poop, and then throw a cheeseburger away while we watch?

Yer a cruel man, Jack Sparrow.

Sorry I didn’t get much sleep.

I hold out desperate hope that we’ll one day see the parts of WoD that were actually cool make a comeback in a less-cruddy expansion.

The Botani, I will maintain, are an awesome enemy.
