Back when the game was new, and fresh, and exciting, Min-Maxing wasn’t a thing, and people were exploring the world when it was brand new, a Grey or white weapon was a considerable upgrade compared to the low-level uncommon (green) one you had.
But now, with Grey being relegated to flavor items that nobody else even looks at, and would sooner /trash than vendor, and white items not even registering as collectible appearances for transmogrification, and weekly quest turn-ins practically spoon-feeding you The best possible weapons in the game, I think Blizzard needs to step back, take a second, and seriously re-evaluate the value of a lot of their items.
And uh… while I’m thinking about it, I think my favorite Flavor-Grey I ever got… it was either a Gold tooth from Gold-Tooth the Kobold rare, or the Noble’s Porcelain bell.
What I’m proposing: Full Item template Overhaul. Phase out Grey and white completely.
Green is the new White. It holds as much value, but has zero stigma. All crafting Reagents are Green, except for Green reagents which are now Blue. Purple and Orange quality crafting Reagents can keep their value, based on how difficult they are to attain.
Vendors sell Green gear wholesale, while Blue gear has a limited supply that respawns over time. to prevent AH scalping, all Vendor items are BoP.
The plain clothes on offer at Clothing vendors in all major cities, including Dalaran, both Northrend and Broken Isles Dalaran? actual, equippable gear with armor rating that makes up for lack of stats, excellent starter gear for that Alt with an extra 500 gold from their main toon.
Plus, you can collect the unique weapon appearances available in Dalaran.
Quest rewards, like the Bloodsail Buccaneer’s outfit from “Dressing the Part” is cosmetic green as well, and can be added to your collection, like the Bloodsail Admiral’s Hat.
