Seriously, Blizzard, can you make it a little easier to gear up? It’s bad enough on a main, but trying to gear an alt is atrocious. Mythic+ barely drops any gear, world boss loot seems to have been nerfed, and there’s no catch up mechanic for the great vault (though I do love getting three options of the same boot on my main).
Why in the world was the loot nerfed in the first place? There was no one saying “Damn, I’d be having more fun in this dungeon if I didn’t keep getting this annoying loot.”
I hope a fix is coming soon, because I’m losing the will to run anything at this point.

There is actually plenty of gear but it’s what you say about the reward for running stuff that’s the issue. It’s not rewarding to do 2 or 3 long runs and then having to wait until the end of the week to get a reward. People got used to luck coins with extra rolls.

This is why any modern wow expansion (Legion onward) is INFINITELY better in the .1 or .2 patch.
The start of the modern expansions gate fun so ridiculously much it’s mostly not even worth playing.

It’s even worse when you can’t upgrade much more outside of being casual…
I swear the vault and raids haven’t dropped but .01% upgrades in a while lol
The ecosystem around gearing in games like this is very very fragile. You wind up having experiences like BFA where there’s 2394823 sets in your bags for 3 encounters or you wind up where we’re at now asking the rng god for just a little more.
IMO the best system they ever had was currencies.
Give me 200 badges for killing a boss and when I have enough i’ll go buy me the piece i want. I’d certainly stay in the game much longer, because even my alts could enjoy that system.
This is not financial advice.

Why yes, yes there was. Streamers, “influencers” and elitists complained endlessly about too much loot.
Not very many regular WoW players did, but these folks whined up a storm.

I thought the main complaint was difficulty in getting an upgrade, not the loot itself.

No they complained about that too. These people hated loot “raining from the sky” or it was some “loot pinata” or it was whining about warforging and titanforging.
Many claimed Classic would be the end all be all of WoW again, and them promptly abandoned it.
Here is what Blizzard should consider doing: Check what the self serving streamer, influencer and elitist community wants and then do the exact opposite.

Having to buy 197 gear from my covenant as my primary gear path feels neither good or meaningful

It is not a bug. It’s Shadowlands’ feature.
The rate of getting gear upgrade is practically the same as before. RNG is RNG. It’s just BFA was raining of loots but majority of them was GARBAGE. But the rate of getting upgrade is practically the same. Even the same rate as getting loots from Vanilla Naxx40. I remember getting gear upgrade in Naxx40 once a month… the same rate you would get on getting a gear upgrade on Mythic Raiding.

Yeah, that wasn’t fun.
People want to kill dragons and get treasure. It doesn’t even have to be gear. It could be mogs, pets, gold, far more anima. perhaps a justice/valor currency.
Right now, for many people at least, running content does not feel rewarding. Period.

NO! 35 ANIMA.

Naxx40 back in Vanilla you say? Oh yes the raid they used over because so few people saw it back in vanilla since it took so long to gear up.

On Vanilla-Naxx40, that was the only place to get gear upgrades. If you were not raiding, you wont see a gear upgrade even if you play 24/7 for a year.
We are lucky in Shadowlands. We have this called Mythic+, PvP and Weekly Vault.
Getting PvP gear on Vanilla was limited too. Becoz the high PvP ranks only get the BiS loots. There is only 1 Grand Marshall. How many were Lt Commanders? I was a Lt Commander doing Naxx40 back in the days. My guildmates envy me becoz I get extra loot for being high rank. Them, even if they spend 24/7 on PvP, if they dont get a high rank, they wont get the High Rank PvP loots.
Felt this one.
Haven’t run anything in, going on 3 weeks now.
Time vs Reward just, isn’t there.
got so tired of spending 4-6 hours a night running dungeons and content to ultimately loot 35 anima at the end then wait till next reset to be given a choice of what I am already wearing or an actual beneficial piece, only… that one shows up in the slot where my legendary is.
(2nd full clear of CN was what sunk the nail in the coffin, 20 bosses and many hours later with 0 upgrade pieces, there is absolutely, no part of that, that is fun.)
but, until we get the ‘influencers’ (Youtubers, streamers) making spam videos about it, nothing will be done.

You missed my point. In vanilla a vast majority of the population didn’t get to see Naxx40 because it took so long to get geared up in MC and BWL. As for PvP gear, yea it was hard to get but they quickly changed the ranking system in vanilla where you didn’t have to hold that rank to keep using the gear.

Dude…I’m so sick of seeing Robot Chicken Handlers. I’ve seen them twice in my vault and had them drop multiple times in DOS. I’m a BrM and wear rank 4 leggo hands.
Getting loot from a 40-man is long. But that’s not all to it. I remember back then, you need people who knows how to play their Class.
I was invited few times out of my elite guild to raid with them just in AQ20. Their damage was way inferior compared to my elite guild. And that poor DPS guild was ahead in progression back in Black Wing Lair days but somehow they hardly progress on AQ. My elite guild reached Naxx40 killed 6 bosses there. I didnt hear that poor DPS guild made progress on Naxx. That was the old days. People became better players after each Expansion. Classic Naxx40 is now a joke.
And Shadowlands is way way way HARDER. BFA is already harder than all previous expansions. And Shadowlands is way harder.
The loots are more scarce in SHadowlands becoz the game is harder for most common people. People on high end are getting the same rate of getting loots like the old WoW. RNG is RNG.
I think this is a major part of the problem here. They really killed the experience for casual players and alts. And there are a lot of casual players.
