Please settle an argument

I say that the fireguard destroyers in BRD are doing fire damage that is not mitigated by higher armor.

The other guy says otherwise. So:

  1. Do fireguard destroyers do fire damage?
  2. Is fire damage mitigated by armor?

You could have a Mage cast Fire Ward and take a hit to see what happens. If it’s fire damage of any kind, it will be absorbed. Or if anyone has a Fire Protection potion handy, but probably not.

I’m betting it is fire damage, but I’m curious either way.

cant comment on question 1 but as to question 2 - Fire damage is NOT mitigated by armor it is mitigated by Fire Resistance.

Why come to the forums to ask? Just open your combat log and look at the damage type for yourself. Tell anyone who disagrees to do the same thing.

What does your combat log say? It should tell you what kind of damage you took.

It’s fire damage, 100%. As others have said, you can use fire damage reducing abilities or items to confirm this. You can also take off your armor and verify that they hit the same amount regardless of your physical armor.

It’s true about the combat log. I just didn’t even think about it at the time. Will of course check it next time I run BRD, if I even run BRD again, but was hoping someone would know off the top of their head.

Settle an arguement? In the GD forum???

Yes. I’m seeking information about classic wow game mechanics in the classic wow general discussion forum. Hard to believe, yet I was crazy enough to do it.

Pretty sure its fire damage, i used shield block on them and it doesnt even count as an auto attack.

Seeking information is great. Settling arguments? Here in GD?

To paraphrase Peter Sellars’ line in Doctor Strangelove: “You can’t Fight Here! This is the War Room!”

Fire and no armor mit 100%

Well, maybe not an argument, but more to settle in my mind what I already thought. There’s always the possibility that I was wrong.

Long and pointless story follows:

The actual situation is that I was tanking BRD with my level 57 druid. Had been doing runs all morning and everything was great. Many compliments, etc, etc. Did 2 runs to emp and several more arena/angerforge/golem runs. In those runs I was healed by healers between level 55 and 57. One was shadow specced. No problems at all. The shadow priest had to drink a little more but he got regular innervates so it went quickly.

Last run of the day we got a level 60 priest in decent gear, had a level 55 DW warrior as a DPS in leveling gear. First couple pulls everything was fine but I did have to frenzied regen since he was hardly healing.

After clearing more fireguards he started crying that I was a paper tank and took too much damage. He demanded to know what my AC was. I told him but reminded him that it made no real difference for those mobs. He cried more.

The next two pulls consisted of 2 fireguards each. Being a nice guy I told the warrior to grab his shield and tank one of the guards. We did, and we each took comparable damage though I had far more health.

The next pull he demanded that the warrior tank the instance since I took too much damage despite me having far better gear and 2 levels on the warrior. The warrior said he didn’t want to as he was fury and had signed on to DPS. I left, the end.

I usually don’t care about this stuff, but this priest actually managed to rustle me. The questions were asked just to vindicate to me that he’s a bad healer.

Yes, giant fire monsters do fire damage. Fire resistance exists to mitigate fire damage. How can an entire group of lvl50+ players not know this

When you get hit the amount of damage you take flashes on your character portrait. If its white its physical. If its yellow is some kind of elemental damage. Most elementals (the fire/water/air ones anyway) do not deal physical damage and will instead deal damage of their elemental type.
