It’s making for a very unenjoyable experience on MG. Currently on a vastly empty version of Stormwind compared to what I am used to.
Is there any way this can be turned off for RP servers?

the Badlands and Un’Goro Crater are actual hell holes of lag and fps loss, but they’re sharding capital cities instead
On one hand it’s nice to be able to log into stormwind and it doesn’t feel like I’m slogging through molasses
but is it worth it in the end if it means SW is dead otherwise?
Anyway unshard SW. I will take the suffering if I can smack a HMP.
Yeah, it’s extremely empty here and the park has like 1 or 2 people throughout the entire day. Though I did manage to get into a fairly big “tour” roleplay in the Cathedral District just over 20 minutes ago.
People were showing us Dracthyr around and teaching us about things.
I seen that being advertised but when I happen to take a look I didn’t see anything. The sharding sucks.
We were traveling around.
Oh wow, THAT is why SW has been so dead. I thought everyone was doing the new content.
Yeah, we’re in a shard. And it sucks.
I thought the Gnews was cancelled last night, only to learn I wasn’t in the shard for it. They had to start a raid group to get everyone in
If we’re still sharded by the 20th, the job faire is gonna be a real fiasco…
Same thing happened with SL prepatch or launch, they didn’t learn their lesson.
This happens every prepatch. We get sharded until we whine enough to turn it off, and then the lag is completely unplayable so nobody uses the cities anyway.
We were not sharded for Phase 1 of the Pre-patch
Frankly, they stated several expacs ago that RP servers aren’t going to shard, and yet here we are. Sharded constantly damned near any time a patch drops.
Because there wasn’t a quest in Stormwind pushed to everyone who logged in during phase 1. It’s not like they just arbitrarily do it whenever someone says “prepatch”.
There is significantly more players on this time. There was nothing to do during Phase 1.
MG Stormwind is always packed, and I’m sure you could crash the server on any given night if everyone in Stormwind started shooting off spells and stuff. But they don’t! They just RP, which seems easier on the servers than combat.
I won’t pretend to know more about server architecture than I do, but I am curious how this is activated. Is there actually some kinda latency metric they use to turn it on, or it is just arbitrarily sharded because there’s a patch?
Even if it is necessary for stability, could the number of shards be reduced? MG Stormwind easily handles hundreds of people on a typical night, but the shards seem to have populations in the double digits. If pre-patch Stormwind has 600 people rather than the typical 200 can we just get two or three big shards rather than a 10 60 person shards, which is what it usually feels like I’m in?
I know this probably seems unimportant but the launch of a new race is a sort of exciting time for RPers so being sent to these solitary confinement shards is sad.
Quick question, how did you change your profile to the Dracthyr? I try to do it with mine, but he never shows up in the character list to change to.
Nevermind I got it now.
This is what gets me. I can barely move with the exploding spell effects from a kabillion people in Badlands, meanwhile social hub RP is effectively dead until whenever Blizzard decides to flip the sharding switch back to ‘off’. Even defensively formed raid groups can only hold 40 people at a time.
It’s wild how many people are actually around if you do a TRP scan, but you’ll only see one or two here or there running around in a ghost town.
What really worries me is that before you do the prepatch quests, you’re phased away from everyone who has done them. Is that going to continue with sharding turned off? Is everyone who wants to RP going to have to do the prepatch setup quests?
