I think these servers should obviously be merged to consolidate the HC playerbase of the era servers. Especially on the less populated faction of each server the population is very low. My friend said he spent 1.5 hours trying to form a Wailing Caverns group on defias pillager horde yesterday and was unable to for example. I just dont see how anyone could honestly think the playerbase would not benefit from a merge.
Timezones. Especially since these are HC servers. There are probably myriad other reasons whether you or I see them or not, but this is one incredibly and immediately obvious one.
Why does the timezone of the server matter? You can just turn off the ingame clock or set it to display local time if you want.
The latency of the connection to the server is determined by physical location.
It’s a physical location. The latency can go from 20-30 ping, to 70-80, just from going west to east.
The anniversary server is functioning fine in terms of latency with only one location. And i think its timezone is set differently from the server location anyways; the two things don’t have to be the same.
Sure, however you set the clock on your own UI doesn’t have to be the same as the timezone the server is that all connections to it connect at, but the distance from wherever you are to that server does make a difference in terms of latency.
This will of course vary from person to person, their physical location, internet connection speeds, etc.
Personally i have 37 ping on east servers and 75 on west servers. I literally cannot perceive a difference in most circumstances.
Well, here’s the thing, and I don’t mean this in any disparaging manner, you obviously don’t seem to have much working knowledge in terms of how the Internet works, so whether you perceive differences or not isn’t a very meaningful metric here.
You run a game client on your local computer. You input keypresses and mouse movements, and that travels through the internet to another computer. That other computer is a centralized server that all computers that play on that server are connected to. So, let’s say you are a couple of miles from that server, and your latency is like 2ms. Great. Someone connecting from 2500 miles away will not have that same latency, but all key presses and mouse movements they do have to travel to that same server.
Now, you can imagine when you are playing together, and you press a key, it travels to that server and then to their computer so they can display it on their client and potentially react.
Here’s a map of internet cables that connect us. Try to imagine the connection for say someone in Brazil to an Eastern Timezone server, say in Virginia vs to a Western Timezone server in Oregon. Try doing the same for someone in Australia, and keep in mind that both of those countries have the same Regional subscription as us on US servers.

Hope that helps a bit.
I understand how this works, but you are talking about a difference of less than 1/25th of a second.
I mean blizzard already determined this wasn’t a big enough problem to split servers when they made anniversary servers in only one location, and so far I have heard literally zero complaints from anyone about that decision.
To be clear, you are talking about a 1/25th of a second difference, apparently because you are using your own pov as the reference. That is not what I am talking about at all.
I don’t disagree with this, but at the same time it isn’t changing the physical locations of servers where people are already playing HC characters.
Excellent. Then there’s not much to discuss here, is there?
That 1/25th of a second matters, to some of us. While aoe kiting, fractions of a second can matter in terms of melee leway. While tanking, that split second can matter if the mob is out of range and I’m trying to taunt the mob off the warlock.
I dont want to be that guy but I will. Playing on those 2 servers right now. Is a grand waste of your time. Idk if youre on it but tell your friend to bite the bullet and start a new journey. News flash those 2 server aint coming back to life until the anniversary server go offline.
That seems like a good reason to merge the servers to me.
i have 2x 60s on skull rock alliance, its completely dead. just give every1 a transfer to defias or other way around, and shutdown 1 of the servers. consolidate the population
no they’re fine separate
plus they’re different timezones, so that’s not gonna happen
all non-anniversary servers are dead these days but they’ll come back
“Time" is often considered one of the most challenging aspects of coding because of the complexities involved with handling different time zones, daylight saving time adjustments, and the intricacies of how computers represent time.
