Welcome to Azeroth!
This shows that you are normal.
Depends what you mean by “fast travel”.
In each zone there are Flight Masters. They are marked on your map with icons. Honestly. I’ve never known what the icons are supposed to represent. They kinda look like slanted silver daggers to me.
You can buy a flight from any Flight Master to any other Flight Master that you have visited. The first time you meet a Flight Master, he will have a Green exclamation mark above his head. When you get to any new village, the first thing you do is make a beeline for the Flight Master so you can fly back there easily.
At level 30, you will also learn to fly.
Flight Masters provide this taxi service only within a continent. You cannot catch a flight from Eastern Kingdoms to Kalimdor or Outland.
To get between continents, there are two methods:
- In Stomwind, there is a Portal Room in the Mage Tower with portals that will get you to all other continents. (For Horde, their Portal Room is in Orgrimmar)
- Between Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, there are ships, Zeppelins and a couple of portals to travel between the two. There is a ship between Booty Bay and Ratchet. There is a portal on the docks in Stormwind that brings you to Darnassus. (That should be a ship, and it used to be, but long story …)
You don’t say which “starting zone” you are in.
If you are in Exile’s Reach, you first need to get out of there to Stormwind. Complete the quests up to the mini-dungeon at the end, and you will be brought to Stormwind.
If you are somewhere else in Eastern Kingdoms (Dun Morogh, maybe), you want to find a Flight Master who will offer you a taxi ride to Stormwind. (All Alliance characters know the Stormwind Flight Master automatically).
If you need more help with this, please post again with more details of where you are, exactly.
Ooof. This is complicated,
WoW is a big game. No, I said a BIG game.
No - think bigger than that!
I’ve lost track of how many quests there are. I’m sure I could find out. ~10,000 maybe?
There are 11 continents, each with a number of zones. Each zone has a story or two. Each expansion has at least one overarching story.
This Timeline gives you a bare-bones list of the major happenings in the Warcraft Universe.
https://warcraft.wiki.gg/wiki/Timeline
World of Warcraft starts in the year 26 on that Timeline. Each continent (= expansion after Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor) is in a different year. You are currently in the Cataclysm era, Year 28 on that Timeline).
You can talk to Chromie in front of the Stormwind Embassy in Stormwind by the Lake to be directed to any of the expansions except the current one.
From what you say, I would recommend asking for the Cataclysm expansion. Chromie will then give you a starting quest that directs you to the Cata zones, including Hyjal.
I would recommend you just keep questing around until level 30, when you get flying. Doesn’t take long, and flying changes your perspective and reach a LOT.
Try Ellwyn Forest and Westfall. Or Redridge. The end of the Redridge quest chain is a HOOT!
When you hit Level 70 you MAY think of buying the current expansion The War Within. Don’t even think of it before that.
YOU CAN MAKE AS MANY CHARACTERS (“ALTS”) AS YOU LIKE. Up to 60 alts!!
Each Class plays very differently. Each Class has multiple specs that you can switch between, and they play differently as well. Each Race has a different “feel” for their characters. And it doesn’t take long playing before you are level 70.
My recommendation, given what you have said, isto make a different class and race for each of the continents, if you really want to do all the story. There is AT LEAST two years of story to do!

This YouTube video is massively long, but split into 1-2 minute chapters, so you can click around and find out about things. It’s a little out of date in not having Chromie and Skyriding, but everything in there is gold. Things you never knew you needed to know!

P.S. I updated the URL for Timeline. My bookmark was out of date. The Timeline page has been updated since, and with more clear divisions.
